2021 Trade Ideas and Deadline talk!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Gibson just seems like too good of a fit. I wonder what the Rangers would ask for. He'd be that Jake Westbrook type that'd fill up a rotation slot that has been much worse than Jake Bauers. Also that kind of a pitcher generally doesn't fetch the biggest price from buyers who are more focused on someone dominant for the playoffs. Hopefully the price is right and he'd slot right into an area of desperate need.

Yes our hitting is bad and it could be improved but I don't think slotting one good hitter into it is going to change as much to our W-L total, especially for the price, as adding that SP which will allow us to develop our young starters like TMac, and give us more bullpen depth and really just give our bullpen a rest.

I know @sportscoach mentioned wanting a Tomlin kind of clubhouse pitcher, and Gibson also seems to fit that: https://www.mlb.com/news/kyle-gibson-a-leader-in-rangers-clubhouse-on-field

Try to be a playoff contender this year, and if not we wouldn't be selling out our future.
Other guys with the Rangers that might be of interest in the unlikely event Gibson goes from a notion to more of a reality... but, only if a larger deal is cobbled together:

David Garcia.. a strong youngster with backstop instincts.. a lot to like about both his hitting and the defensive gains he's made as a catcher in the two weeks he's been behind the dish..

Owen White.. an interesting RHP...perhaps RHRP.. just another "throw in type" that has some significant upside if coached up..

Thoughts?

per Hoynes - Luplow's rehab has slowed - dh Friday night, but not Saturday as he was experiencing discomfort - further testing may be in order

I really like the idea of bringing Gomes back as one of the C. I'd bring him back and offer him a reasonable 2 yr deal with an option.

I doubt Mancini will be made available by Baltimore. He's too endeared I think. Santander is a more realistic target, but do we really need him?

If another 1B is brought in I still think Cron is the best fit and least expensive. BB has earned the job so far and looks good so I'd like to see him there the rest of the season unless he completely takes a dive. Having a RH bat like Cron to spell him against tough LHP and pinch hit would be ideal. If he were acquired tomorrow then he and BB could rotate between 1B and DH until the Franimal returns.

I love Ketel Marte and he would be an excellent fit, but his cost is likely prohibitive.

All this talk about who we would likely acquire is fun, but who are we willing to deal? Would Toronto give us Moreno for both Naylors and Quantrill? We've already discussed how some of us think that it's time to deal Eddie and Cesar. What can be expected in return?

I’m of the opinion Tribe will need to punt on this season, sad to say, and that trading top prospects in the long shot bid for a wild card spot will only hurt the team’s long term competitiveness. Getting back Reyes and Plesac will provide a needed boost but Bieber’s ongoing struggles plus underwhelming performances from Hernandez and Eddie Rosario will be too much to overcome. I think a wiser course would be to see what young, unproven guys are part of the future core and give them extended playing time this season.

Exactly. Not trading young talent for someone that might get us a playoff spot. Team has too many holes to make a playoff run

Just to piggy back on what you are saying here, the tribe is now 6.5 behind the White Sox with really no chance at all of winning this division. Do the Indians really want to hold onto, high priced, under performing vets like Eddie and Cesar in hopes of landing a playoff play in game?

Trading them adds 14 million to the coffers that can be used for needed extensions. I'm not saying a complete punt on the season is in order, but the odds are what the odds are for the remaining 100 games.

Agree but trading Hernandez and Eddie won’t yield much given their career worst seasons in 2021.

Cesar has been hitting pretty damn well since the start of May.

With that said, I think the return for him would be light. Unless the Indians are still squarely in the WC hunt at the deadline, I think they will take what they can get and give the playing time to a young player. Even with a reasonable $6m 2022 team option, I don't see the Indians picking that up with the players they have in the near horizon.

Could we have expected much in return if they were having "normal" seasons? I don't know that either's value has changed much in the small sample, but both have been hitting better recently. I'm not even going to speculate what they could garner in a trade, but I bet there are a couple of teams out there that would be interested in their services. I wonder if the Yankees would like to have Eddie?

That $6M option is very reasonable and should have some value. Does the option remain if he's traded?

The Yankees remain committed to keeping their payroll number under the Luxury Tax Threshold for the massive reset it delivers. In short, any deal with the yankees has to be payroll neutral or in the Yankees favor.. A better return in prospect capital can be acquired if the Indians take the decision to pay their already sunk costs for the 2021 season.. and not beyond..

It would benefit the NYY's if the Indians were a third team in transactions like this..
