Here’s what I think will happen with Sexton, we will offer 15M for 3/4 years, with the ideal he will be coming off the Bench and playing the Rubio role….

They will counter with 20M a year, and say the only reason he not a starter is because he got hurt….

We will counter that offer for around 17M a year, if he say no , we will say go bring us a offer……. if he can’t get one , he can play for the QO and bet on himself, which I think will be suicidal, because he will be coming off the bench, assuming no one get hurt for a extended time….

In theory this is great, but Sexton can’t play the role Rubio played because Rubio is a high-level facilitator and defends both guard positions well. They’re totally different players. If Sexton could defend and facilitate like Rubio, he’d probably be getting a max himself.

Does anyone else think it is a distinct possibility that the Cavs miss the playoffs again next season? Looking at the East six teams are clearly better than the Cavs: Miami, Boston, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Brooklyn. The Cavs seem to be more on par with the final two teams Atlanta and Toronto.

What makes everyone so sure that the Cavs can win more games than Atlanta or Toronto next year?

Yea but you’re basing that on I’m assuming the product that you saw last season and comparing it to next season…

I would assume here the thought process is the natural progression of internal growth from your top 2 players in Garland & Mobley should yield substantial positive results…

They should be able to take another step, which, in theory, would suggest the Cavs (with health of course) should be able to take the next step as a franchise…

Both players can be elite at their positions…

Why don't we analyze him by removing his two worst crunch time performances?
Remove both his best and worst 2 performances if you like. It won't get much better.

But the reason you should factor in the two performances where Kyrie was guarding him is because that's not how the rest of the NBA is going to defend him.

Let the off season play out, but the Bulls aren't a lock to make the playoffs. Also, Butler and Lowry aren't getting any younger.

Rich Paul has led players to take the QO in the past and have it go poorly. Just ask Nerlens Noel. That route wouldn't shock me though.
Noel lost out on a ton of money when he turned down that extension and is currently suing Klutch. It would surprise me.

Regarding Sexton, I could see us viewing his value similar to how we value markkanen, an important piece, but not an untouchable core piece. So a long term deal averaging around 17m makes sense. And since there probably isn't another team that can pay him more, could make sense for both sides.
I'm sure him and his agent want more, but the market is what it is. I hope it plays out that way, I want him here long term, as our 3rd guard.

Similar story with Levert, but a bit more complicated since it would be an extension to an existing deal, probably would end up costing us more to keep him. I want him here as well, but kinda a chicken/egg scenario where he wants the extension now and we want to wait to see how he looks with our starting group after a full training camp.

A lot of interesting roster building decisions to be made over the next month or so.
I'll give LeVert another season, but nothing I saw last year makes me want to extend him on the type of contract he'd want.

Given reasonably good health, this team's success goes as DG and Mobley's development goes. DG discovered that and took his leap. Mobley flashed alot of those qualities already in his first season. If he works on his body, I think the rest will take care of itself and we will see his full leap next season. There's also the unfortunate fact that the East is loaded with all-star bigs and SF tweeners like Embiid, Giannis, KD, etc.,. So if he wants those all-star accolades, he will have to work hard

Always possible - but some of those teams are starting to be in decline. Harden is going to be borderline unplayable in a year or two (and under a ridiculously huge contract). Derozan and Butler are both 32. Brooklyn's success depends on Kyrie and Simmons both being dependable at the same time....

We could be the team that collapses (second year regression from Mobley or an injury to DG/Allen, etc.) But I don't think we're much more likely to collapse than the others.

I think they'll be a play-in team again.

At that point anything can happen either way.

Wouldn't be surprised if they miss another year.

When talent margins are this close, it really comes down to coaching.

I think we all should know by now that JB is not a top-half of the league head coach. He’s likely bottom 10.

Players love him, he gets buy-in, but he’s entirely out of his element offensively. His rotations are often a mess, and his in-game adjustments don’t exist.

I think the Cavs actually hiring an offensive coordinator and strategist might be the biggest addition of the offseason, far larger than any single player we add.

That addition, along with the natural progression of Mobley and Garland will be the biggest drivers of success.

As far as the teams on the list—sure, the NBA is competitive. I don’t think the Hawks are that good, and I think the Bulls are staring down a rebuild. I also think Philly is significantly overrated and they’re about to be another year older.

I think the Cavs could be the 4-6 seed if they make the right hires.

I think the teams collapse had as much to do with conditioning as anything. Guys had such a heavy load at the end they were worn out. Need better conditioning and JB needs to use a longer rotation if he is asking guys to play so hard

Think you hit the nail on the head here. You look at the teams that are going deep in the playoffs and they all used a deep rotation (10+) during the regular season to keep everyone's minutes low. JBB doesnt seem to trust more than 6-7 guys and when those dudes are out the rest of the rotation will play 20 mins one game and get DNPs for a month after. And those 6 guys are getting 160% the minutes they really should be. His rotation is like something from 1997 and it drives me nuts.

If Koby can pull off a nicecFA signing or shrewd S&T (or our #14 pick ends up being a steal in the draft) I believe the Cavs can be a # 4 or 5 seed in the East behind the Bucks, Boston, and 76ers…..either way barring injury they will make the playoffs without the benefit of the play in.

But Atlanta and Toronto were both better than the Cavs this past season and they have young players that will progress as well.

I just hope people realize that the Cavs are not guaranteed a playoff spot this upcoming season.
