2023-24 Regular Season Thread II: March Toward Destiny

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sounds like someone got pushback from the powers to be on being so critical of the team..

Allen, and more importantly, Okoro and Merrill looked like completely different players when Mitchell was the primary point guard.

Definitely could be a coincidence, and I’m not willing to draw a straight conclusion to the starting point guard being the only or most important factor, but this thought popped into my mind.

Okoro and Merrill are primarily stationary shooters. The ball moved better and crisper when DM was running the show because he’s more decisive and forceful. Guys like Merrill, Okoro, & Wade are always going to look better when the team moves the ball well and makes the extra pass.

The way that Mitchell plays collapses the defense more than Garland does. Garlands slow and probing doesn't really collapse a defense in so it doesn't really generate the same kind of 3pt shots.

If you think about the style of play with Delly, Calderon, and George Hill, they never really generate 3pt shots the same way that Kyrie or Lebron did while running the offense. I think Garland has a more similar style of play to those first 3 players than he does Kyrie or Lebron when they ran the point. Part of it is the gravity of the ball handler threat of attacking the paint and putting up a quick shot.

i posted it somewhere, the scouting report is out on garland and he is easy to defend, or at least make the team settle for shots they don't want.

1) sag off the three point line (he doesn't pull up as much as he should), 2) direct him to a help defender (garland fancy dribbles but does not pull up from mid range), and 3) anticipate the kick outs (he picks up his dribble and throws desperation passes)

When Darius or Caris are on the court, the Cavs second chance efficiency is significantly worse.

Mirror-like reflection (Tristan impact playing a role? Roster availability during different portions of the season? Donovan/Craig better at relocating to provide an outlet for the offensive rebounder and can contribute more to a new possession with a shorter clock and a scrambled defense?). Not the most relevant information in regards to the Cavs but an interesting nugget I saw when looking at On-Off numbers with the guards.

----

Of all the two-player combinations that have played at least 100 minutes together, Craig is involved in the top two combinations and Tristan is involved in two of the top 3 combinations (garbage time playing somewhat of a role here).

1) CPJ - TT: 202 minutes played, 15.1 net rtg

2) CPJ - Dean: 169 minutes played, 14.8 net rtg

3) Donovan - TT: 154 minutes played, 13.7 net rtg

4) Donovan - Merrill: 246 minutes played, 13.1 net rtg

5) Donovan - Wade: 598 minutes played, 12.2 net rtg

Well, I was only 18 months ahead of the curve in saying the team should trade Allen and that Garland/Mitchell weren't compatible long-term. Should've traded Garland for Durant when they had a chance.

I still think Allen and Mobley needs broken up. As does Garland/Mitchell. If Mitchell signals he's re-signing, you ship out Garland. For what? I don't know.

I'm less sure about Mobley/Allen. Both have their warts. But haven't made good on their offensive potential, insofar as total package/repertoire. Mobley injury bug is concerning. Allen's bitch-made-ness is concerning. Mobley is due a big raise. Allen is under contract another two seasons after this one at a steal. You keep one and that player plays center.

I think if you keep Mobley, you have to force feed him volume on offense. Sink-or-swim. He's the fourth option in FGA per game in 2023/24. He's efficient, but very dependent on others creating for him. This wasn't supposed to be the case at this point in his career. The only way to move him up the pecking order is by clearing the deck. Trade Garland, stop letting LeVert shoot 12 times a game.
