2023 Rule 5 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the Guardians can also trade him, right?

My best guess is that they used their open roster spot to claim the highest rated prospect they could today to use as filler in an upcoming trade.
But, look at the draft ... only 10 selected. Almost anyone else could have had him or traded up with Pitt/LAA to select him for them before us for cash. This was a weak draft compared to last year. But, Cle did the right thing, best upside. We can take a free look and see if V can fix his swing and miss before season. Maybe RF who knows... I just wanted a pitcher with high upside as well as he is going to block time for Valera and Noel from getting time in last option season. Yet, the probability is, he is returned before season begins.

Brown was 33rd prospect per FG at begining of year ... 3rd round in 2020 .... not bad for this phase
Brown was mostly 91-93 during the abbreviated 2020 college season but was more 92-95 the season before, when he struck out 65 and walked just nine in 49 innings of relief work. If he can reclaim that comfy mid-90s range, he is very likely to be a quick-moving middle relief piece with a vertical action fastball/curveball combo. (At-home dev)

I'm no expert but,,,,

I don't see a 20-year-old, who desperately needs more development, staying on the major league roster all season. Especially if he wouldn't be playing very much at all.
but if they really like him I'm sure they could work out a deal with the D'backs.

To me, De Los Santos sound like a mini Jhonkensy Noel.

Yeah it seems like its longshot for sure. Also, there is no way the Diamondbacks don't take him back if we attempt to return him... So it's either trade for full rights or extreme trial by fire.

sadly.. this kid doesn't rise to "Jhonkensy Noel" level (if there is such a thing)... This creates another wasted roster spot..

And Bryce Ball gets taken from our AA team with the last pick of the rule 5 draft.

This De Los Santos kid struggle in the first half at AA at age 19!!!! 2nd half when he turned 20, he hit .309/.888!!!! and more power to come. This is Naylor's replacement if not resigned. Maybe Naylor goes to RF a bit to let this guy play some more. Not optimal but was a low risk ($50,000), high reward player!!! Plus, anytime he gets a hammy from all the windsprints that we will have him do, he is on the 10-day DL!!!!!

Another point to accentuate his youthfulness... In 2023 - he only faced 1 pitcher who was younger than him, everyone else who threw him a pitch was older.

So how can you keep this De Los Santos kid around? Odds are is that he will be returned. However, we are probably not making a serious run at WS next year (due to the lack of offense). Now in 24 hours, we have gotten 1st pick (most likely college bat) and a 40+ to 50 FV kids that is on par or better than Noel and younger.

For all those that complained about Arias lack of field time ... guess what? We don't need to play this kid every day! We can have him work with V and our fielding coaches (maybe OF) and see what happens. Next year (2025), he can go back to AAA -- and Valera and Noel who will be out of options will be up or traded.

So still
1B - Naylor
2nd - Gimenez
SS - Arias/Rocchio
3rd - Ramirez
Util - Freeman (give him more run as the main guy for 2nd/3rd/SS 4-5 times a week)
LF - Kwan
CF - need to fix Straw/Laureano double up and get rid of one now ... (but both have options -- not ideal but can hide them in AAA when needed)
RF - Brennan/Arias (4th OF - emergency infielder if not SS) -- Brennan maybe gone or optioned if Valera can win that RF battle
DH - Manzardo/Valera/Noel take your pick
C - Naylor/Betancourt

If we have only 1 of Laureano or Straw, this means this kid is your 13th guy... who can DH as well and sub in for Naylor. There is enough roster flexibility with Freeman and Arias to move and cover holes for a few days. I assume that he or Naylor will pick up and OF glove. People wanted Rodriquez as our righty OF ... this De Los Santos guy is better (and a bit more speed than Noel who we put in OF)

You need to "Santander" him so he can be kept all year on the injured list.

Here is next year list. A lot of pitching that we got to figure out
