2023 Rule 5 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Of those 26 names who is worth worrying about other than Aleman? Manzardo will be rostered so no need to even discuss him. Dion maybe?
Pretty much all of the southpaws have something going for them, will all of them figure it out? Aleman is a lock at this point and Sharpe could easily end up right there with him.

Few guys can shoot up like Halpin and Webb

Thornton had great numbers at LC but slipped to decent at Akron. But, still walks too many.

Kokx isn’t probably on list. A pitcher like Nikhazy, Mace or Carver can also shine.

So this dude goes on the 26 man roster? I saw some Diamondback fans assume they'll get him back at some point. I'm not entirely sure of the rules.

The cycle of the rule 5 draft is amazing to me.

Year long it gets discussed and argued down to the microscopic fibers about roster crunches and who we have to protect and I think in the past two years we’ve had no one selected in the MLB portion.

Not saying it’s not relevant or interesting for some of you to talk about but the gap between the bandwidth of discussion it garners and the actual affect it’s had is just so massive.

Edit: I thought I was in the general offseason discussion. Seeing as this is a fully dedicated Rule5 thread that people can enter(or choose not to) for solely year round discussion on rostering. It was actually a little rude for me to post this in here, so apologies for that

Anthony Santander would like a word…

Kinda proves my point.
A guy
From a rule 5 draft 7 years ago
Who likely would have been traded at a time when he had little value and hadn’t established himself much

Good for him for developing into a good MLB player.

Well, we either have the next Pedro Guerrero or the next Franmil Reyes here.

But not this season.

We had 2 selections last year, Nic Enright and Kevin Kelly. Enright had to deal with cancer and was returned and Kelly put up .7 WAR out of the bullpen for Tampa.

Sure rule 5 is a bit of a nothing burger, but when you follow these guys from draft to draft - you end up a bit invested in the players themselves.

Last year it was Kelly (who had decent year for Tampa) and Enright
in 2021 (cancelled) but were had Oscar exposed
Year before that was Oviedo and Tom

I think when some of these guys get drafted it hurts their development as they got to stay up on the team vs working on stuff in AAA. De Los Santos today went from a 50FV to a 45FV with us (may have been adjusted for some fielding issues at 3rd. He fell from 5th Ariz prospect to our 12th in Pipeline (sb 5-9 if 50FV with us). Yet, did we really help him long-term? Probably not.

Yet if one of our prospects did this in AA, he would be pencilled into 2024 at some point
Last 58 games of 2023: 78-241 47R 15(2B) 3(3B) 14HR 41RBI 6BB 62SO .324 AVG. 927 OPS

10. Cleveland Guardians (39)
Deyvison De Los Santos, 3B, from Arizona Diamondbacks

This was the sexiest pick in the entire draft because De Los Santos has plus-plus raw power, right now, at age 20. His selectivity at the plate and infield defense have ranged from “immature” to “god awful,” and the former was a big part of why he had a below-average all-around offensive season at Double-A Amarillo despite hitting 20 bombs. Both were justifiable reasons for Arizona to leave him unprotected. De Los Santos is kind of a freak, comparing physically to former NFL running back Michael Turner more than he does anyone else in baseball. He does not get cheated and swings as hard as he can at every opportunity. His slider recognition is awful and he chased them at a 49% clip in 2023, per Synergy.

DDLS’s defensive issues are mostly to do with a lack of arm accuracy. He looked better on defense late in 2023 and actually made some slick plays at both first and third late in the season. With José Ramírez entrenched at third base in Cleveland, a 1B/DH role seems to be in line for Deyvison. The Guardians desperately need impact power like this in their lineup, so badly in fact that I think De Los Santos has as good a chance to stick on this roster as any because of how devoid of pop Cleveland’s non-Ramírez and Naylor (Josh and Bo) sticks have been. He has a chance to hit 30 or more bombs at peak regardless of whether he learns how to identify spin, and De Los Santos will be a middle-of-the-order force if he can learn to be more selective.
