22 GM Thread!!!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Though it certainly will be expensive, that should not automatically disqualify us from pursuing Contreras if we are challenging for the playoffs, the division in particular.

We have a ton of prospects, pending roster juggling and a young team that could use some juice. Will be very curious to see how we navigate, especially if we are 5 games or less out of the division. If we are leading??? Things might get crazy.
No, it should definitely disqualify us from pursuing Contreras.

Talent is relatively fungible - i.e. the prospect capital you save on NOT paying for talent that is of no use to us, can then be used to purchase OTHER talent. It's like putting your vacation budget toward a luxury car for the one day you don't plan on going out.

By NOT spending that money, you can then pay for a basic car that gets you around when you actually will be using it.

I'd hate to eat omelets at some of your houses - lol.

Agree to disagree. I'll see where we are standing in 2-3 weeks and reassess

Effross is a righty averaging 91 MPH with the FB who never had a K/9 above 10 until he got called up to the majors last year. His sample size is 50 innings. He is a sinker/slider guy who has lived off called strikes (I'm guessing a lot of backdoor pitches).

I have nothing against trading for a guy like that but you've gotta temper your expectations.

If we're going to be buyers at the trade deadline we need to buy something that increases our probability of winning when it matters. Focusing on two guys, one of whom will likely be completely outside of our contention window, and one who will leave after the very beginning of it, seems silly.

In what kind of standings are you willing to match Houston's bid for Contreras?

Houston has the third highest position player WAR in the majors, despite having a catching squad that is batting .140 with -0.8 WAR. Two 35 year old catchers (Maldonado and Castro) are splitting time and actively losing games. The better of the two, Maldonado, (who is hitting .147) has a vesting option which becomes guaranteed if he plays in 90 or more games.

Obviously, this is a team that would benefit greatly from moving Maldonado to the bench and cutting bait with Castro, while starting Contreras. And Contreras would be great for a playoff run by filling in the lone gaping hole in their lineup.

Meanwhile what can the Guardians do with Contreras? Miss the playoffs and expend prospects while doing so? And then still lose all their big league catchers to free agency?

We definitely should have some type of price limit in place which is why I am trying to find another player who has team control in a position of need, which in my mind is RP and Effross is under team control for awhile so he fits into the window of contention and his best years will likely be in that window as well...

Effross also isn't a fastball type... his fastball he barely ever pitches, he is red in just about every category but fastball speed...

i think we will do a mix of things, not just sell or buy, but keep retooling...

Looked at Effross actually pitch - he's a sidearmer so I think he might hold up better cause at least he has a gimmick. But like, if we really want him why not just trade for him? Although I don't think the Cubs would even want to give him up.

That's the biggest question, I am trying to find short term and long term help in a deal with the Cubs. I am not doing short term without finding a way to get the long term as well, whether it's a nice prospect or a player with long term control with some proven time.

Okay I am a bit tired of the Cubs trades that most people think will happen that have no idea what Cleveland wants so I put mine up... @CDAV45 @hockeyjohn @Gson

Two ideas are...

Cleveland gets
OF Happ
RHP Effross
C Contreras
(Plus maybe a lotto prospect like C Ballesteros)

Then the Cubs get, prospects matched to 40 area value, but are not allowed to include Espino, Valera, Williams, Allen, Lavastida, Naylor, Bibee, Rocchio. (I want to include Angel Martinez here too as not available).

Do you think you guys could live with a trade with those parameters?

I am guessing Arias as the main piece... so 20 more after that getting twenty more but only one of Curry/Battenfield/Burns...
I understand the desire to get Happ and Contreras, but how do they fit in with the current situation? Will the FO know prior to the deadline if they are really contenders or not? Will playing Contreras delay important development time for Naylor or Lavastida which could hurt us next season? Who sits when Happ is given LF duties? Are you taking AB away from Straw because I doubt that Kwan will see fewer plate appearances? Are you sending OGon back to Columbus and forgetting about giving Brennan a much deserved look? What about Jones and Valera?

Personally, I like both Contreras and Happ, but I don't think they are good fits due to their limited control(FA in 2023 and 2024). Herein lies the conundrum that I speak of frequently.

I don't think they will make a trade like this. I believe it is more likely that we are sellers at the deadline and it might surprise us who is dealt. Just my $.02 that I'm not overly confident in saying. WTF knows in other words.

We're crammed in the high minors and have Rosario who will likely fetch us a pretty good return.

I think these can fetch a return of some higher tier players, with maybe some quality lower level prospects that wouldn't be eligible for the Rule 5.

I don't see Cleveland trading him, but if they do, they would have to get a massive haul...
Don't need or want a massive haul.. the Guardians need very limited & specific pieces..

And NO ONE SEES THE GUARDIANS TRADING HIM.. but...

We still want a massive haul... Get a legit MLB bat and 3-4 prospects, nothing wrong with that is there? Lol

No.. not a massive haul.. a very limited and specific return.. & there is EVERY F&^KING THING WRONG with a four or five for one deal.. the least of which is a 40 man roster crunch...

Naw, you do what you did with Lindor 1-2 on 40 man/Rule 5 eligible and the rest not eligible for a few seasons...

So you get players that can contribute now and you get players who are like 25/26 ETA... I mean nothing wrong with getting 21 draftees/signed in 22 international prospects is there?

I don't see why that would be a problem...

Trade him for Happ, Contreras and Effross.. Problem..... uhhhhhhh ... Solved.

Clearly a joke.

Well let's see here...

I am bored so let's make this work... lol
