No, it should definitely disqualify us from pursuing Contreras.Though it certainly will be expensive, that should not automatically disqualify us from pursuing Contreras if we are challenging for the playoffs, the division in particular.
We have a ton of prospects, pending roster juggling and a young team that could use some juice. Will be very curious to see how we navigate, especially if we are 5 games or less out of the division. If we are leading??? Things might get crazy.
Talent is relatively fungible - i.e. the prospect capital you save on NOT paying for talent that is of no use to us, can then be used to purchase OTHER talent. It's like putting your vacation budget toward a luxury car for the one day you don't plan on going out.
By NOT spending that money, you can then pay for a basic car that gets you around when you actually will be using it.
