23 Offseason GM Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think about 4 is a good estimate. Something between 3.7 and 4.2 feels about right.

If you get an ERA right around there, from a guy who can go every fifth day without being hurt, and take you deep into every one of those starts, that's a very valuable commodity to have on your team.

It would undoubtedly be better to have a third stud at the top of the rotation. I think everyone is in agreement, which is why you heard about the front office going after guys like Rodon and Mahle, and we've speculated about trading for guys like Woodruff.

Quantrill is a valuable piece to the puzzle that is a major league starting rotation, and he's one that I'd be shocked if the Guardians traded away.

Gun to my head, you make me pick who I head into 2023 with, Carrasco or Quantrill, I pick Quantrill because I don't think you're getting a complete, healthy season out of Cookie.
I agree for the regular season I would pick Quantrill, because as mentioned he is a great innings eater, but one high leverage playoff spot I'm leaning Cookie.

I remember listening to the Yankees broadcasts back a while and they'd always talk about how Paul Quantrill (his father, a relief pitcher who was with the Yankees for a bit) had a "rubber arm", i.e. that you could just keep putting him out there day after day and his arm would bounce back. I wonder if durable arms are in the genetics. I sure hope so.

And @KluberSociety there's no straw man. Quantrill plus more for Jansen has been brought up multiple times.

I think it's always been @CDAV45 but I don't really keep track of who said what.
No it hasn't always been CDAV45. Sending him and Sandlin to Toronto was the first thought about trading him that I've had. In fact, I think he is vastly underrated by most sites(especially BTV) because the sabermetrics don't favor a pitch to contact SP like Cal. They want to ignore his actual performance that is creeping on 400 innings of very good SP and refer to his FIP and xFIP. That's the problem with most stat heads. They can't see past whatever numbers they are referring to.

Having said that, I see Cal as more of a BOR starter and if a guy like Lopez can be added then you do it without hesitation. If you can get Lopez and have to use Cal for a significant upgrade like Jansen then you probably ought to do that as well.

I agree that I probably prefer Cal to Cookie. Toeing the rubber every 5th day and pitching like Cal has is extremely valuable. I'm not saying Cookie can't pitch as well or slightly better, but it's certainly not a given. Factor in reliability and cost and you have to go with Cal IMO.

That's me after reading your post. Hope you're happy!

I'm looking at the Market...

A's are now likely to hold onto Irvin and Puk...

Jays' need for Plesac is now gone since they signed Bassitt...

Mets moving Carrasco or McCann is still possible, but less likely than I am hoping...

Vazquez getting signed, makes the market even less friendly... Zunino is making the most sense...

I'd sure like to know what the A's were asking Us for whatshisname.
I guess our two organizations have a very different take on skills and potential.

Also, I will never enjoy watching a Zunino at bat.

It's gonna be painful. That extra HR/month will come at the expense of a bunch more ugly looking Ks and more outs overall. I don't look forward enjoying it.

Well let's see how he fits into Cleveland's culture with his bat. He won't hit any worse than Hedges, but hit more HRs without a doubt in my mind... He is all or nothing in a sense...
