#25: ATH, Jabrill Peppers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hard not to see all three of our first rounders starting.

We don't really have a choice.

They need live-game reps in order to develop anyways. All other positions are so different to QB in this regard.

Definitely 4 Day 1 starters if you including Gonzalez. Possibly 5 or 6 depending on Ogunjobi and Kizer.

Yeah, I'd say it's likely at least a couple of our non-first round picks start as well, but I was just commenting that I basically see it as impossible that our three firsts aren't day one starters. Garrett certainly will be, and Peppers plays a position we desperately need. And they wouldn't have cut Barnidge if they didn't intend to start Njoku.

I'd say there's an outside chance Kizer starts too. I could see him beating Kessler in camp.

Lets be honest. Kessler could start the season and would probably only last 3 games before getting hurt. Kizer better be getting all the 2nd team reps.

I wanted to first break down some of the strengths Peppers possesses and then take a look into how this translates to Williams’ scheme at the NFL level.

Instincts

His instincts are off the chart. In this first play, Peppers lines up in man coverage on a slot receiver who motions across the formation. On the snap, he immediately recognizes they are trying to set up a receiver screen, and he switches off his man to blow up the play in the backfield:

Open-field tackling

The thing I love about his game is his ability to make blockers miss and make a play in the open field. Open-field tackling is one of the most difficult skills to master for any defensive back

Blitzing

Blitzing is an art form. It takes both skill and timing. This is one of Peppers’ best attributes. In Michigan’s scheme last year, they played him all over the place. This allowed defensive coordinator Don Brown to unleash Peppers from a variety of positions. Here he lines up as a nickel linebacker and blitzes the B gap as the defensive end draws two defenders. This allows Peppers to use his speed to get up field.

Be an eraser

Great players find ways to overcome not only mistakes of their own but those of others around them. I found this play against Oregon State in 2015 to be a prime example of that. Peppers is playing linebacker and gets caught looking in the backfield and doesn’t expand out to the curl. But because he’s such a great athlete, he locates the receiver and the football and proceeds to make an amazing pass breakup.

I think Seth Devalve will start week one. Protection schemes and route running are tough to get down day 1.

DeValve produced a pretty average run blocking grade (62%), an improvement there would be a big step forward for the TE position as a whole.

For those wondering, Barnidge produced a Run Block grade of just over 43%

Starting offensive skill positions are becoming arbitrary titles in the NFL. Hue will have three receiver sets with one tailback and one tight end, two tight ends and two receivers, a traditional full back and tight end look... The formations can change from series to series, let alone field position.

I know many don't listen, but 850 has Sabrina back on. She's straight lambasting Peppers. Said he's a pot-head who's high every day. Doing moli and "lean" codeine syrup. She's gone as far as to say he was hungover and still messed up at the combine. Peppers is going to go after this girl...
