I think for movies like this it's a good idea to have a spoilers thread. Use the rate the last movie thread for a spoiler free post of if you liked it or not, use this thread to discuss plot points you liked/didn't like.

I watched MOS last night, then Batman vs Superman tonight. While watching the end of MOS, I thought what about all of the people in or around those buildings they are destroying? So I really like that that's where this movie started, showing the other side of that battle and how that was the origin of the Batman vs Superman part of that.

At the same time, I'm sure people who haven't watched MOS recently and don't remember the details would find a lot of things confusing. I'm glad i watched MOS again before going.

I see some people and reviewers complain that Batman vs Superman part turned when Superman said "we have to stop him from killing Martha" or something to that effect because "what if their mother's names were different". Only they aren't different. They didn't give them names for this movie to make that work, their mother's always had the same first name. That stopped batman long enough for him to understand that Lex Luther has been manipulating everything.

I thought they could have left out Batman's whole dream within a dream sequence. There was too much information in that of things he didn't know yet.

They also should have figured out how to do the chase scene without Batman killing anyone.

I'm not sure why a hybrid between Zod and Lex turned out to be a giant monster. One plot point they blew is I don't think he should have had super powers before he was exposed to the sun.

And the very end didn't make a lot of sense time wise. Bruce Wayne was at the grave when Lois was standing there, then saw Lex Luther in prison, then Lois dropped the dirt.

I'm not sure how they plan to explain in the next movie that Clark Kent is alive. The superman part is easier.

"Perry White, meet our new reporter: Blark Dent."

Or, "I'm Clark's twin."

Was that Cyborg in Batman's one dream sequence?

Some of the most profitable movies, well reviewed big blockbusters of last year (Fast 7, Jurassic World, Rogue Nation, The Force Awakens) were nothing more than flashy set pieces fit in around glaring plot holes. However, critics and audiences were able to turn their brain off and enjoy those moves. But it comes to Batman vs Superman, everything has to fit together perfectly or else the movie is a complete waste of time. The movie where a flying alien, a man in a bat constume and a centuries old Amazonian fight a large troll, no plot holes are allowed.

Basically, multiply JJ hate by 100 and you get Zack Snyder's level of appreciation among the press. :chuckle:

http://www.avclub.com/article/its-official-zack-snyder-unstoppable-234377

Heroic maverick Zack Snyder has finally, and definitively, triumphed over his archenemies in the critical press, deflecting their feeble, merely human jabs at hisBatman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice with an $180 million projected opening weekend. In the battle of overwrought, needlessly gritty spectacle versus (sorry, “V”) impassioned pleas for blockbuster-seekers to just stay home for once, please, the American people have clearly picked a side. The movie is on track for the fifth biggest opening in American history, and nothing Rotten Tomatoes has to say is going to make a lick of difference.

It’s not just movie critics that Snyder is heroically defying, though; he’s also taking on the fundamental rules and beliefs of the characters he’s chosen to tell his bloody, violent stories about. Take, for instance, Batman’s famous resistance to killing. Purists might argue that it’s a core component of the character, and that by violating it—by, say, having Bruce Wayne blow up a bunch of bad guys with a rocket launcher—Snyder is betraying a deep misunderstanding of what makes the character great. But obviously that’s silly. Hand-wringing arguments about “the one line Batman must never cross” didn’t make $180 million at the box office. Zack Snyder did.

Besides, the killings in the movie barely even qualify as murder, according to an interview Snyder just gave to Hey U Guys. “I tried to do it by proxy,” he explained. “Shoot the car they’re in, the car blows up or the grenade would go off in the guy’s hand, or when he shoots the tank and the guy pretty much lights the tank [himself]. I perceive it as him not killing directly, but if the bad guys are associated with a thing that happens to blow up, he would say that that’s not really my problem. A little more like manslaughter than murder.” Snyder also cited Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns—a major influence on his superhero throwdown—in which Batman kills pretty regularly. (He apparently wasn’t quite as moved to take pages from Miller’s other Batman comics, though, like the ones where he locks Robin in the cave and tells him to eat rats, or where he has post-fight burning-dock sex with his mask on, because “It’s BETTER that way.”)

Anyway, now that film criticism is officially over, and the Snyder Era has begun, we’ll obviously be pulling up stakes here at the old A.V. Club, and selling the address off to the audio-visual department of some lucky local high school. Our brick-and-mortar stores, meanwhile, will all be converted into a line of delicious fried chicken joints. Y’all should come by; we batter our chicken in our own sense of cinematic disappointment, and the tears of our heart-broken critics.

Box office does not equal a good movie. That argument is dumb. My childhood pretty much forces me to see certain movies and this was one of them.

The things I thought were bad include:

  • The Waynes getting murdered and Bruce falling in the cave. Batman Begins covers this, so if you're one of the three people that don't know Batman's backstory, go see that movie again. The gun caught in the pearls was dumb as well. Thanks for showing that part to us more than once.
  • Most everything with Lois Lane.
  • Chatting with Dad on the mountain top. What was the point of that?
  • Flash-forwards - I get that this is showing what could be, but this time, along with the Waynes getting killed, could have been dedicated to developing Luthor's motives.
  • Luthor's motives being non-existent - why is Lex so butt-hurt over Superman in this movie? How does he know Batman is Bruce Wayne when he sends him those checks?
  • Superman having to stab Doomsday instead of one of the other two superheroes doing it. I was at least relieved that Lois didn't do it, as that was my major fear when she went and got the spear from the water. Damn, I wish she would have drowned. Anyway, Superman could have just tossed it to WW or Batman and then used his skills to lay down cover fire to let them get there to do the stabbing.
  • Lastly, Batman not killing Superman because he said Martha was so lame. First of all, does Superman call her Martha or does he call her mom? Who the hell calls their parents by their first names? I was half expecting this exchange: BM: "Your mom's name is Martha too?" Supe: "Yup" BM: "Did we just become best friends?" Supe: "Yup!"
Ugh...so disappointed by this movie.

Batman shouldn't have been touched for a decade. Obvious money grab is obvious. Just another comic book movie they pumped out as fast as possible while comic book movies are still relevant.

They showed the Waynes getting murdered so they would have the dad saying Martha in the movie otherwise the Martha reference later makes no sense.

It was a 5 minute scene. If they spent a good 30 minutes or so on it, it would be tedious, but did it really affect the film?

I agree Luthors motivation is a weak point. I wouldn't non existent. He told the staory about his grandfather fearing a dictation. I also think we'll get further motivation in future films (which doesn't excuse this film, of course).

He was the one with the spear. Lois found it, and he heard Lois. He really didn't have time to pass it to someone else. Also, who else was powerful enough to get close to him.

Agree that this was another weak point, however they did spend a good chunk of the movie showing that Batman was losing humanity, and Superman showing concern for his Earth mom kinda snapped him back.

Well, Jurassic World followed Jurassic Park 3, which was absolutely godawful, and The Force Awakens was bound to be looked at positively after the cinematic dump that was the Star Wars prequels. As for Fast 7, that entire series has always been about dumb fun. I haven't seen or really even read anything about Rogue Nation, so can't really comment there.

As for BvS, it comes following the highly-regarded Nolan Batman trilogy (I personally wasn't a huge fan of the third film, but the first two are awesome) that basically saved the Batman film franchise. That's a much harder act to follow than any of the films above, and so people are inevitably going to judge it more harshly.

Also, saw this on Facebook and it made me laugh:

ME: Hey, DC, did you ever think that maybe having some respect for your source material and not cramming seven different storylines into one movie and maybe following the model set by Marvel's Cinematic Universe could've made Batman v Superman a better movie instead of a boring slow march to death with like one really good scene for Batman and no other redeeming qualities outside of Jeremy Irons and Ben Affleck's performances?

DC: Fuck you, little kid, when's the last time you got any pussy?

ME: Touché, DC. Touché.
