Beer snob thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ok, this part about thin beers actually helps.

You may want to try porters or stouts which are typically heavier in the feel. I don't usually recommend those to people but if you're thinking you don't like crisp or light beers, these may be more up your alley.

Im not sure what it is about the thin that I don’t like- it just tastes unnatural?

When I eat food, I’m huge in texture/consistency. I can only imagine it’s similar for beers.

porters and stouts are usually darker, and more chocolate/nutty, right? I’m a big dark chocolate guy, so that might actually work?

I guess I’m more south central! But basically south mountain!

Like Laveen? Cross roads? You can PM me if you want, just curious. I am north, by PVCC...or Union hills and 32nd Street. You are closer to the Brewery areas than i am as you know. Hipster central is close to you, lol.

Yeah, very much Laveen. 35th and Baseline, can see the towers and Estrella’s peak from my back yard.

With the lower 202 expansion, we’ve basically become centra Phoenix. Total blessing.

Dark Ales, Souts and Porters in that order are my favorites. I venture out of the group every now and then, but not often. I dislike IPA's, almost all of them, find them highly over rated. I also like some foreign beers, they have lost popularity, but are worth trying. There is a German restaurant by me that has some fantastic Stouts worth trying for example.

A good Pilsner is under rated imo, and good ole fashioned Ales are worth trying too. I tend to stay away from bitter beers, i like a good smooth drinking, fuller tasting ones. But with flights and 3 or 4 breweries, you can for sure find your groove if you will ever find one.

One of my friends from high school lives in Tukee, he would disagree, lol. I have a good friend in Laveen, not my cup of tea, but the closeness to the downtown seen can be fun for sure.

That’s pretty much the appeal- we shop in Tukee in 20 minutes without having to pay 500k for our house.

Laveen is great the close you are to SoMo, and the further you are west. We get both.

We’re also within 40 minutes of basically every major Phoenix brewery now.

You are 20 minutes from enough Breweries you dont need to venture. I would guess atleast 20 tasting rooms are within 20 minutes of you. Who needs more? lol

Edit:....why would you want to go to Tukee? Nice place to live, but its isolation was its appeal. Not much there fun. Downtown scene would have a ton more appeal....or downtown Chandler and Gilbert are growing and fun, too far for me though. I pretty much stick to North Phoenix, PV (my area) and Scottsdale and occasionally downtown.

A Nitro Stout, or anything on Nitro for that matter, might be worth trying for you too. Any beer carbonated with Nitro vs CO2 is going to have a thicker, creamier feel due to the smaller bubbles. Science!

FWIW, I have the exact same negative taste reaction you describe to the beers you've tried. While I occasionally will have a maltier lager or ale, I generally stick to porters and stouts. The rest of it all tastes thin/grassy/bitter/sour to me.

Beer Advocate/RateBeer can be your friend when looking for beers if you've got the style narrowed. Easy to get flights if its on draft, but it kind of sucks to go bottle by bottle if you don't have any guidance as to what is good. I tend not to like nitros, but a lot of folks do.

Okay, IBU question as I do research.

Obviously, the lower the less bitter. Is that perceived bitter, like based on ingredients, or is it just it will be X more bitter than y?

Like 50 vs 60 is the same as 40 vs 50 in terms of a jump?

So, it's not on like a 1-100 scale or anything. It's a measure of parts per million.

So, yes, it's a linear scale. But also, TECHNICALLY it's slightly not linear, as when you increase parts per million, you're decreasing the amount of other stuff as well.

Example: If you have 5 red cubes, and 5 blue cubes, but I have 6 red cubes and 4 blue cubes, what's the difference?

Is my group of cubes 20% more red than yours, because it's 6 vs 5? Is your group of cubes 83.33% as red as mine, since it's 5 vs 6?

Or, is your ratio 1:1, while mine is 1.5:1, meaning I have a grouping that's 33% more red?

It's sort of however you want to look at it, but the easy answer is yes--it's a basic linear scale.

To add to that, even the greatest beer tasters ( cicerones) in the world cant tell the difference in IBUs once you get above 100. Furthermore chances are anyone that isnt a cicerone is goign to have difficulty picking out the difference between 70 and 80 IBUs.

Ive been on way too many brewery tours in my life, but basically I have been told that while IBUs are in fact based on actual measurements, the IBU level doesnt really tell you much about beer. Unless you have beers from the same brewery chances are the comparision is going to ultimately be irrelevant.

Ive got one for you

Guiness draught has an IBU measurement of 45
Heavy seas (local Baltimore) Loose Cannon (triple IPA) has an IBU measurement of 45. (super hoppy)

Those beers arent remotely similar, and yet they both have the same IBU measurement. Im not going to tell you IBU measurements are irrelevant, but... its close.
