Sign Richard Sherman. Draft a CB with our first pick.

Not much of an opinion either way on him, but he's already indicated that he doesn't expect to sign with a team until after the draft.

That's cool with me. I want his veteran presence in the locker room and on the field. He has enough left in the tank to be a solid #2 opposite Denzel Ward. Should also come at a decent price.

He's very scheme-specific.

If we're starting Sherman, we're never asking both our outside corners to play man.

I want Denzel Ward in more man coverage.

I'm fine with defenses that split the field in half, or running MEG coverages, but I want to see less of Denzel playing base zone coverage this season.

That's not what Joe Woods does though is it? I though he called primarily zone based schemes right?

Either way, I think Richard Sherman is one of the rare players at his position that's smart enough and skilled enough to adapt to pretty much any scheme.

It depends.

Woods has been in the league for a while, in a lot of different schemes. Denver certainly played a whole lot of man.

I think you're blinded by the star-quality of Richard Sherman and the weight his name carries.

He is not a corner who you can just line up in man coverage on the outside regularly, and have success. That was never his strength.

My man, you haven't watched enough Richard Sherman then and are relying only on name recognition on this one.

I'm not going off of name recognition. Richard Sherman was still good when he played last year. He didn't fall off a cliff. Plus his experience in the league and his experience in this scheme should be an advantage.

As far as the scheme goes, have we seen anything that would lead us to believe that Joe Woods is not going to play mostly zone? I don't think so. So ultimately finding a #2 CB who plays man coverage a lot shouldn't really be that pressing.

Sherman is very smart and has a high football IQ, but that doesn't mean he would do well playing man coverage. That was never something he excelled at in his career. He was a shutdown corner in a cover 3 zone scheme in his prime. That's vastly different compared to someone like Darrelle Revis who excelled in man coverage.

Woods is likely to play zone mostly but you still want the ability to run some man depending on the matchup in the week. I'm all for bringing Sherman here on a cheap deal - maybe we'll have more flexibility at the corner spot after the draft but I don't think Sherman could suddenly become a good man coverage corner at this point in his career.
