Browns Training Camp 2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Shut up, play hard, let your game do the talking
Like he did in 2021

And 2020

And 2019

It's not unusual at all for a productive veteran on the last year of his deal to want a new contract. Hunt's already earned it.

I hope he gets a nice fat stack wherever we send him, and both parties are happy with the amicable split.

You can't go asking for money when almost kicked out of the league. He put himself in the minimum money tree. Last year he played like 7 1/2 games. I don't blame the team for not rushing the guaranteed dollars.

He’s the 15th highest paid back in the NFL right now…
First, I see you're going by average dollars per year, rather than what they're making this year.

Second, I see you're already accounting Hunt's roster bonus (200K per game) into his salary. That 3.4 million could go up in smoke if Hunt is inactive.

Even if Hunt plays all of 2022, he's getting paid roughly what guys like Chase Edmonds and Rashaad Penny just got in free agency. He's playing below market.

It's not unreasonable, at all, for a player who is getting paid below market value, and has given this organization 3 years of bargain contracts, to want financial security.

Neither am I? I've been saying since we drafted Ford that Hunt is going to be traded.

Both parties got something out of the relationship, and I wish Kareem the best in his next landing spot.

And he got his extension in 2020.
Yes, not at all unusual to look for a new contract, but to request a trade with only a year left seems quite an escalation.
To your earlier post about him being more than a #2 - agreed - I meant that in the context of Chubb clearly being the #1 back.
Good news is the trade demand will make his value around the league very clear. Should make it obvious if the money he is looking for is out there. If it is, someone will compensate the Browns to lock him up. Personally, I doubt its out there - not because Hunt isn’t good - but because RBs still are depressed in value relative to other positions (though their value is increasing relative to what is was the last 10 years), and also because I can’t see a team wanting to commit 2022 dollars and comp to the Browns this year.

Glad the Browns have DEJ and took Ford. Must have seen this coming.

Why do you think it's an escalation?

To me, it seems clear that both sides have been talking about an extension. Those talks broke down, and so Hunt is saying "If I'm not going to be extended, please trade me"

I think it's reasonable for Hunt to have that take. I think it's reasonable for the Browns to not sink more money into Hunt at this point. It makes sense for the two sides to break up.

What do you think the Bills, Chiefs, Rams or Bucs would give up for Hunt? I bet we could get an offer of a fifth that escalates into a fourth if Hunt plays enough games. The problem is, improving a fellow competitor isn't worth that.

So, you're left looking at the bad teams--and if they're not ready to compete, why are they shelling out draft capital and money (in a new contract) for Hunt? The trade offers you'll get from those teams will be depressed and not reflect Hunt's value.

Of course, you could always just get a stupid franchise overpaying for a wasted asset--like how the Colts lucked out with Washington giving them a haul just for the privilege of paying shitty Carson Wentz his albatross salary. I just don't count on those moves happening.

Finally, I don't think "Hunt is going to demand a trade. We better draft Ford" is how it went down. I think Berry likes to get the replacements on the roster ahead of time. We drafted Ford to make Hunt expendable. We drafted Emerson to make Greedy expendable. It's one of those "team building guard rails" that we saw on that DePodesta laminated page that everyone loves to reference. "Don't pay for depth." By drafting guys before you come to that critical junction, it's easier to let vets walk.

That's how good organizations build teams. It's how you not only save your limited financial resources for the players who demand it, but also replenish your draft cupboard with compensatory picks. Browns fans just aren't used to us being one of the good franchises in the NFL so it all feels foreign :chuckle:

What's a return even look like for Hunt? He's a #1 back for half of the league, maybe more.

I think we fundamentally agree on everything except on if a trade request is an escalation. I think it is, you do not. Totally cool.

My thinking is going from “I want more money and I’m sitting until I get it” to “trade me off the team” is an escalation. That’s all.

the value for RB in today's NFL( esp not on a cheap contract) is like a NYC taxi cab medallion; near worthless

wish for a 4th or a rotational player depending on the buyer.

He's a good back in rushing & catching, I think the offense is going to change with Watson. the browns need a stud WR1 for Watson. for him to be completely comfortable running an offense he needs his Hopkins. the running back position isn't a priority with Watson at QB, hes never needed a stud back.

If the offense was being run under Mayfield than yes I would resign Hunt.

Here are the starters where I don't think the teams have any interest in trading for Hunt because of talent already in place:
  1. CMC
  2. Zeke/Pollard
  3. Swift
  4. Aaron Jones
  5. Dalvin Cook
  6. Kamara
  7. Saquon
  8. Derrick Henry
  9. Najee Harris
  10. Austin Ekeler
  11. Jonathan Taylor
  12. Javonte Williams/Melvin Gordon
  13. Joe Mixon
Super Bowl contenders we probably don't want to help out:
  1. Devin Singletary
  2. CEH
  3. Leonard Fournette
Tanking teams that should have no interest:
  1. Cordarelle Patterson
  2. Rashaad Penny
  3. Marlon Mack
I don't think these teams care to make a marginal (at best) upgrade, or they just aren't looking to compete right now:
  1. JK Dobbins
  2. Josh Jacobs
  3. Antonio Gibson
  4. Miles Sanders
  5. James Conner
  6. Cam Akers
  7. Breece Hall
  8. James Robinson/Travis Etienne
  9. Damien Harris/Ramondre Stephenson (I just don't see the Patriots trading away draft capital for a veteran RB)
That's 29 teams written off. I don't think Hunt is the best scheme fit for the 49ers/Dolphins. I think Chicago might be the place that makes the most sense.

If I have to bet on Hunt's next landing spot, Chicago and Miami are the two places I'm looking at.

Just keep him and take the comp pick
Is signaling to the NFL that you're not willing to take care of players worth it?

I think we're close to becoming one of those franchises that vets go to for pennies on the dollar to compete for a Super Bowl or to reclaim their careers. I'm not willing to lose that just to try and play hardball with Kareem Hunt.

Hunt was never almost out of the league. The only reason the Chiefs cut him was because he lied to them. He was always going to get a chance somewhere else. Anyone who watched that video knows that what he did wasn’t that bad. Not acceptable conduct, but not enough to end an NFL career for a guy who was still young and lighting it up on the field.

I’d wonder if you could make that comp highly conditional in your benefit? He could hit some nice milestones if he starts and stays healthy. I don’t know, just throwing ish at a wall.

Bummer he wouldn’t want to ride it out for a year before hitting the market.
