Cleveland Guardians Offseason Discussion 2021-22

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The odds of Oscar being a "guy like Harold Ramirez" himself is quite high.

Would rather keep the 40 man spot for a better rule 5 eligible guy they may be worried about or a free agent/trade acquisition.

The odds of any particular one of the many middle infielders in the system being an impact bat that moves the needle is likely small but the more guys you give a fair chance to in the majors the better chance you have to make a sound decision about them.

Problem is at least those middle infielders can play a defensive position, many of them at a high level, and still give a ball club something when they are in the lineup without an "impact bat", if they end up being that kind of player.

Oscar is not a good outfielder, defensively. His hitting profile has a poor track record of translating at the MLB level. An all power, no on-base skills, poor defender in OF can be found every off season essentially for free.

Do you think they will be picking someone for the Rule 5? The choice of Stephan was a good one, though the Indians/Guardians have barely used the Rule 5 draft to add talent in the past... I know you said there is a lot of talent around the league that could be available.

OGonz is a weird one at the end of the day. We all know he has holes, but his production keeps out producing any holes he seems to have. People are in love with the production cause we have been lacking MLB production in the OF... Honestly, I'd rather keep him over HRam, but we have so much talent to protect, his profile makes him a high bust probability as well.

I also feel like with all of the MIF talent we have, if one shows up with a solid bat and if spots get solidified since they are good athletes, they can transition to different positions honestly. I'm sure most of the guys, if they are told they can make the big leagues in a different position than SS, they would take it in a heartbeat...

Doubt it right now, but impossible to tell without seeing who is going unprotected.

Focus is on extensions and adding quality MLB talent at positions of need this winter. Rule 5 doesn't exactly line up with that.

It's not nothing..

interest is in the beholder's eyes..

w.a.a.

I've read that same answer in this forum by random posters on this site for years.

Their past has no bearing on this current situation. So yes, just a lazy, nothing answer from a guy who has 0 connections with the franchise.

Cleveland's financial outlook over the next few years is going to be the most unique stretch this franchise has seen in a long time, maybe ever. Which makes that nothing answer even lazier for someone claiming to be "in the know".

There's only one person making the claim of being an insider..

Everyone else is just spitballing it or opining on what may be the course of action based upon the historical record of what this club has done for "other" players entering into the deep end of the player salary pool.. It should be noted that the answers Mark P gave to the two NON POSTERS AT THIS SITE were similar to the ones many people here give: Hopefulness for an extension.. Emotional / sentimental desire for JRam to remain.. No foundation or facts in evidence of any change to the current status..

Financially speaking from a knowledgeable business perspective.. it's a wonder (w/ kudos to the comptroller's office and staff) that this franchise survived the 2020 - 2021 seasons and weren't in danger of hanging a for sale sign out or submitting documents to the league for emergency relief....

I can't wait for this pesky World Series nonsense to finish up so we can get down to Business!

We moved Lindor, Carrasco, Clev etc to keep costs down and we didn't spend in 21... I think we will be fine budget wise...

there wasn't any money coming in to spend after 2020.. budget wise.. 'creativity' is going to be a worn out word..

OGonz is a heavy bust candidate so if we don't add him that is the reason why. Also we probably won't keep all those guys luckily... Mercado ends up being the candidate to keep in the OF since likely we have a bunch of lefties to be in the OF plus he is a solid defender. I have a hunch Chang is going to be legit in 22...

Chang is the one guy from that group that still remains a mystery and i'd like to hang on to him. Maybe he's our 1B.

Funny to see some people pretend that we don’t know that there is substantial mutual interest in getting an extension done, and that it makes a lot of financial sense for both parties.

"I would lean towards no, just because 'the second extension' has so rarely been a tactic for Cleveland"

This is a weak argument. Excluding Jose for a moment, the Indians previously reached pre-arb extensions with Kluber, Kipnis, Brantley, Carrasco, and Roberto.

They of course gave Carrasco a second extension, but it never made sense to extend Kluber, Kipnis, or Roberto a second time. Same with Brantley considering how much time he missed in 2016 and 2017.

The second extension for Cookie was as a result of the heart and leukemia issues... I don't recall if it was before or afterward the diagnoses..

A second extension has just been a rare happenstance with the Indians.. very rare, indeed..
