I actually really believe this now as well. This wasn’t always the case, but it’s becoming more and more clear there is a defined and much needed role for Sexton on this team and he seems like the type of guy willing to sacrifice to win.
He's willing to sacrifice, but how much and for how long? Is he willing to be a 6th man for the rest of his career with fewer minutes and playing off the ball?

Here's my Sexton post from the General Discussion thread:

I'm inclined to keep and extend Sexton. This year he agreed to change his game to be more of an off-the-ball player instead of running the offense. This is exactly what he needs to do. Knowing how relentlessly Sexton works on his game I have little doubt he'll be just as effective a scorer working off the ball as he was last year when he dominated the ball.

He's a very talented athlete who outworks everybody and I believe that talent plus an almost maniacal work ethic will yield great results. He's a tremendous shooting guard in a point guard's body, but I think his burst and jumping ability will make up for being 3-4" shorter than ideal for the position. The key will be improving his 3-point shot, but he is so good at blowing by defenders that they don't dare crowd him on 3's, which gives him the space to get the shot off in rhythm and with a normal arc.

Sexton is witnessing Love and Markanen adjust their roles for the good of the team. Marky switched positions like Sexton is being asked to do and the team is thriving. Love is coming off the bench and playing fewer minutes and the team (and Love) are thriving.

Sexton may be asked to do all of it; come off the bench, play fewer minutes, AND switch positions. The first two parts are obviously not the direction he wants his career to go - I'm sure his goal is to be an All-Star and 6th men, no matter how well they play, don't make All-Star teams. So I expect Collin will be moving on in free agency after next season if we don't move him before then.

I think he could be very good at what JBB will want him to do next year, but I don't think he wants to make a career out of it.

Sexton is gonna want to get paid…What are you guys talking about ? A 23 year old guy looking to get his 2nd contract is gonna sacrifice ? This isn’t a vet looking for a ring…

The whole everyone is happy and smiling on the bench thing is cute but just cause he showed up to cheer on his team doesn’t mean there is any indication of his role or what kinda money he is going to seek…

Just for a random example: The Orlando Magic and their little 8-9 wins throws him an offer sheet with whatever high number on it and the dude would sign it without hesitation…

You don’t think 18 to 20M is not getting paid, I know Dennis Shroder would take that….haha

Sure. I just think it’s naive to believe the guy is gonna take a home town discount cause he’s happy attending a game…

But if that’s how people feel by all means enjoy the thought :chuckle:

He may play fewer minutes when everyone is healthy But this is the NBA. No team has everyone healthy
He will get big mins over the course of the season

I think he ends up playing as much as Rubio did as a 6th man. I just don't believe he will be off the floor that much with as talented a player he is. He will be in at the end of games and playing big minutes.

And as I said before, he can start. They can take him out after 1 or 2 min and be staggered with Darius as much as possible. He can be taken out early against bigger teams or whatever. There are 10 ways to adjust and still give him minutes.

It’s also about feeling respected. I guarantee Sexton thinks of himself as a starter - a core piece - not a role player. A team offers him a few million more and a starting role and he’s going to take it. Just about every guy in the league would do the same.

Last night's game was a pretty good example of why we could really use Sexton. Even if he's not ideal height. Watching Garland try to do everything with limited success, or have guys like Mobley try to go 1-1, was horrible to watch.
How else is he supposed to get better at going one on one.. except to go one on one?

Maybe, but I think you guys are not getting his psychology right though.

If he can make 50-80M and be on winning team I think he prefers that to going back to his first 3 years.

He can be on one of the hottest young teams in the league as a major contributor or go back to being a guy who is accused of putting up good stats on a bad team. He has some bad games at the beginning of the year, but he also basically won the Portland and Clippers game for the team and he was loving it.

I really think he wants to win more than anything and beat teams, not put up empty stats.

Exactly.

Sexton isn't going to sacrifice a single dollar. Of course he's not going to come out and say it – he doesn't have to. It's gonna be the old "Of course I'd like to stay here, but in the end, it's a business... so we'll see." That's NBA code for "Money talks, MF".

It's impossible to overstate the importance of the 2nd contract for a guy like Sexton. He's not a sweet-shooting, crafty big man who can make money in the NBA until he's 37. Jitterbug shooting guards relying on their quickness tend to have a pretty short shelf life in the League.

Who is going to offer him 25M dollars tho? Cavs match up to that IMO.

He'd be rusty. You certainly wouldn't want to risk injury by coming back too soon. There would be some concern regarding chemistry. But he'd be a nice extra weapon to have in the arsenal.

This is still in the realm of speculation and probably won't happen, but still nice to see us talking about if a player could return in time for THE PLAYOFFS
Everything that I've read about this surgery indicated it was at least possible to fully recover in 4-5 months. So I have always been surprised to hear the flat out "out for the season" label applied. Let's see how the rehab goes and hope for the best.
