Josh Gordon discussion

Re: Browns wanting 2nd round pick for Gordon. Niners interested?

As a fun excercise we should compare Gordon's rookie year to the best receivers in the league.

Fitzgerald - 58-780 -8
C. Johnson - 48 -756 -4
A. J Green - 65 -1056 -7
Dez Bryant - 45 -561 -6
A. Johnson - 66-976 - 4
J. Jones - 54 -959 -8
J, Gordon - 50-805 -5

Mind you Josh Gordon had been out of football the year before his rookie year, and missed all of the off-season programs as well because he was a supplemental pick.

He already has over 300 yards receiving in his first 3 games this year and appears ready to take that next step.

I don't think people grasp how good his rookie year was when you consider he had a rookie QB throwing him the ball. His numbers are right there with how the games best performed as rookies, and as you'd hope he has come out like gang busters at the start of the new year.

This kid is going to be a top 5 receiver in the league, and we just have to deal with whatever comes with him.

They don't grow on trees, and by the grace of God on his last pick with the organization Heckertt finally got something right.

Not to mention, he didnt start the first few wks, and went a couple weeks without QB play (both Weeden & others). He improved, and his trajectory is scary. Last yr his routes looked half assed, he has drastically improved his route running, and physicality. He...is....a....beast. Not just one the Go routes, but everything.

Side note: Megatron didnt blow up until 3 years in? 4 if you count yardage. Gordon can give that guy a run for his money.

Re: Browns wanting 2nd round pick for Gordon. Niners interested?

Gordon however is already a phenomenal player. At his current value he is worth more in this offense than T-Rich could ever be. His value now is probably a 1st, but the fan feedback isnt worth the trade off. However, if he continues to improve and work hard on the field. He can and will be Top 3 WR in the game. That is something you do not come by easily.
Plus, there is the longevity aspect. A legit RB will give you 5-7 seasons if you are lucky, whereas a WR can give you 10 plus.

I see your longevity & raise you contract. Gordon is producing for cheap...and we still have him two more years at a very reasonable price. Dude will get paid, but lets enjoy it.

Were a pass happy offense. Keeping a stud WR makes more sense than a goal line RB. We can find that value for cheap. Hell...bring Vickers back and let him run up the middle on the goal line.

Dion Lewis will be a great "air back" in this offense.

Guys are throwing around terms like phenomenal and great quite a bit.

I wish the Top 3-5 WR talk would slow down, he's got a ton of growing to do before that even becomes remotely possible.

I think what people are saying is, he has top 5 WR potential. Tough to argue with that.

Re: Browns wanting 2nd round pick for Gordon. Niners interested?

Brandon Marshall is a legit top 5 WR with character issues (at the time, model citizen afaik in CHI thus far) and he netted 2 3rd rounders. Lets keep things in perspective here.

Re: Browns wanting 2nd round pick for Gordon. Niners interested?

it doesnt matter how talented he is, or who the browns QB is, if gordon isnt on the playing field. if the browns can get a high 2nd for him or above I take it. If things are as bad as edmonix says they are, the browns need to take what they can get

He's too good to just let go. If he was just a slightly above average talent, that's one thing. Gordon is a really special talent. It's not easy finding guys as good as him. There's no way I trade him. He's worth the risk. We're winning, and he's been a big contribution.

I don't know, for all the years we complain about crappy QB play. Stripping away the best offensive weapons away, and expecting a QB to come in and still succeed is asking a lot.

Is he going to throw passes to himself?

The Browns got something really special going with Gordon, Cameron, Best, and even Little.

I think they'd be foolish to part with Gordon.

And based on his production leading up to his stint in MIA and his production since, that trade was not only shocking but netted historically poor value.

He's already, arguably, the top receiving talent in our division not named AJ Green*. He has a much higher ceiling than Torrey Smith or Antonio Brown.

As Rob said, his potential is sky high. He can be a top 5 receiver if he can harness it. You'd have to be playing the devil's advocate to argue against that.

*EDIT: AJ Green

I don't think we're saying he's top-5, but he's definitely a top-5 talent. I don't think that can be disputed at all. Look how far he's come, in not even a year in a half of football. Outside AJ Green, Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, and Thomas. Is there any receiver out there going forward that you'd have to have over Gordon?

And Gordon has a chance to be as special as some of those guys mention. His talent and skill level is there. Sometimes talent is so worth the risk, I don't know why the Browns would seriously entertain moving him. He's worth the risk. It's taken this long to get some talented skill players offensively, and it'd be so like us to want to get rid of it like its the herpes. God forbid we score touchdowns in Cleveland.

They better be pretty sold they're going to find a receiver of his talent if they do. I think it'd be a step back for us to be honest. A QB needs a few toys to play with out there. Can't expect to turn chop liver into a New York strip steak.

Re: Browns wanting 2nd round pick for Gordon. Niners interested?

This seems like a leak from the SF side of things. There wasn't a peep about the TRich trade until after the fact. Even when Irsay was talking about the blockbuster trade in the works, nobody suspected TRich. It looks almost like propaganda for the 49ers fans. Their team is trying to work out a trade for a #1 receiver in exchange for a low 2nd rounder. Their consolation prize is that their top receivers will be back in a couple weeks. It's a great story for them, but the reality of the trade is borderline insulting from the Browns side. I wouldn't doubt that SF really did attempt to work over the Browns. Maybe the FO is trying to stir up interest, or just trying to motivate Gordon. I really don't know, but it seems like this was done on purpose.

AJ Green says it isn't even close to arguable.

Yikes, meant to add: "not named AJ Green." But you get my point.

I'd take those four and:

Larry Fitzgerald
Brandon Marshall
Dez Bryant
Andre Johnson
Eric Decker
Wes Welker
Jordy Nelson

I think Gordon, Smith, Cobb and Alshon Jeffrey are right in that next tier of up an comers

If you were starting from scratch, building a team from the ground up, you'd pick Welker, Jordy Nelson, and Eric Decker ahead of Josh Gordon? Be my guest, but your team won't be very sustainable.

In that scenario, it might even be a stretch to say Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson should be picked ahead of Gordon. These are two guys on the wrong side of 30.
