Unpopular opinion.....

Berry spends more than 75 cents on the kicker position this year browns have 3 more wins, including today

Let's dive in to this...

Loss to Chiefs: No missed kicks
Loss to Chargers: No missed kicks
Loss to Cardinals: No missed kicks
Loss to Steelers: No missed kicks
Loss to Patriots: No missed kicks

Loss to Ravens: 1 missed FG, lost by 6 points - the miss came on the Browns opening possession. Browns would have had the ball down 3 on the final possession, but they never got past their own 32. Don't think this miss made a huge difference in the outcome.

Loss to Raiders: I explained this one in a previous post. The Browns were actually forced to be appropriately aggressive on 4th down in the 4th quarter when they would have almost assuredly attempted a tying FG instead. The FG miss was ultimately not the difference in the game because the Browns went for and got a touchdown they otherwise wouldn't have attempted.

Loss to Packers: If Naggar makes the opening XP, the Browns don't attempt a 2PT on their 2nd TD. If we assume he makes that XP (which is not 100% given he did miss one), the Browns would have ultimately gotten the ball back with 2:05 to go with the game tied at 24 instead of trailing by 2. But they never got into field goal range anyway, so once Baker threw the INT, the Packers would have only needed roughly 15 yards to be in position for the game winning field goal without it ever going to OT. It's fair to say the Browns may have have a slightly better chance of winning with made XPs on the first two touchdowns, but it's certainly disingenuous to say it cost them the game when they never would have had the lead in the 2nd half at any point even with those makes.

Other games the Browns missed a FG or an XP
Win over Bengals
Win over Lions
Win over Ravens
Win over Broncos

So basically... no? The Browns kicking at best cost them 1 game and really more like 0 games?

Call me crazy or overreacting but I think this is Baker's last year in Cleveland. Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski are cold, calculating operators. They do not seem like the types who like to tolerate the drama and pettiness Baker brings off the field. Add in his on-field performance and the fact that so many of our best players are in their primes now, I think they look for a QB who can maximize the talent level on this roster now. Nick Chubb/Ward will be in their 5th year next year, Garrett his 6th. The Browns cannot afford to wait around to see if Baker is the guy. He is who he is. He is an average QB who needs great talent around him to succeed.

Read the tea leaves, reporters such as Charles Robinson and Albert Breer (who have connections to this front office/coaching staff), keep insinuating that Baker may not be the guy next year and keep throwing out names like Deshaun Watson and Marcus Mariota as a possible replacement. Those two reporters are reputable enough for me to believe there is some credence to what they are saying. Those leaks are not coming from the Baker camp. A game like today has to aggravate Stefanski because if there is one thing he hates its turnovers. Baker had 4 costly ones today.

Adding it all up, I think this front office/coaching staff does not believe in Baker long-term, Stefanski calls plays like he doesn't trust him and they will try to find a replacement for him next year. There was a quote Kevin Clark of the Ringer had of Berry in which Berry said the QB is the most important position in football and its up to them to support the QB. Berry has shown to be aggressive and he will be this offseason in upgrading the QB position. Does this mean he lands a big whale? No clue.

I 100% agree with you.

I think the Browns and Baker Mayfield are heading for a mutual divorce this upcoming offseason even if the Browns are unable to acquire one of the higher end veterans via trade and aren't comfortable drafting a rookie in the top 50 picks.

I feel like Baker wants to move on for a variety of reasons and the Browns will want him to move on as well.

Just last year we was THIS away from being in the AFC championship game and probably heading to the Superbowl. Baker was cooking in the playoffs too.
Were… we were

Reminder that this is the rant thread, so this is a rant.

Here’s the worst thing….this year might have been our best shot. Ravens are decimated by injury. Steelers clearly one foot in rebuild mode. Bengals still growing. And no one dominant team in the AFC or NFL and…the Browns won’t even be a playoff team. Next year will only be harder too.

The Browns are going to head into 2022 wondering, not if they can be a SB contender but…can they even make the playoffs? The division will be tougher. The Steelers may have DeShaun Watson to deal with. Baltimore would have their RBs. Bengals and Burrow develop over another off-season. And the Browns? Looking for a QB, K, WR, asking if our HC should give up play calling, and starting to have to make tough salary cap moves. Objectively, on paper they are a below average non playoff team next year once again. As a non playoff team you don’t get to talk SB.

It’s a disaster. Possibly we are picked to finish last in the division in 2022. We may honestly have missed the window and be closer to a rebuild (think 2018 Indians) than we are to contending. You bring back Baker? Then it’s over. You move on? Then you have no idea how the new QB will fit in and it may be a growing pains season. It may be the late 2020s before we can think of contending again. Or worse, another 20 years on the QB carousel. This is gonna be an ugly ugly off-season.

Again this is a rant thread…The Browns are truly the worst. They are as far away as ever. Don’t kid yourself into thinking otherwise. Don’t give them your money or time. Walk away. The Cleveland Browns will never be a good football team.

Baker was the prize at the bottom of a cereal box full of shit we had to eat for going 0-16. He isn’t our franchise QB, but we will always have 2020 and that playoff win. I guess it could have been worse.

Even further away then when they were 0-16?

Yes. Because at 0-16 we had bottomed. Now we have to go through the motions for another year or two and THEN decide to bottom to find a franchise QB.

Eh, I don’t share your pessimism, but tis the rant thread

Bottoming out isn’t a pre-requisite to getting a decent QB.
