Matthew Dellavedova

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

@Randolph Keys

This entire forum is unsolicited opinions on other's decisions, odd response, especially when you agree with my assessment that he is a defensive liability

You are allowed to have opinions, just like I'm allowed to have the opinion you haven't seen him play enough games to form your opinion. Incidently, I don't think the answer about his defensive ability is as black and white as foot speed = defensive ability. Larry Bird was slow as hell but could defend the perimeter well with smarts and technique.

Here's the aussie perspective:

THE third point guard role with the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers essentially is Matthew Dellavedova's to lose, the Aussie Olympian signing a two-year, $1.3 million non/partially-guaranteed minimum contract. <!-- google_ad_section_end(name=story_introduction) -->

Dellavedova, who turned 23 on Sunday, impressed the Cavs during his Summer League games for Cleveland in Las Vegas where he was likened to NBA stars suchn as Steve Nash and Mark Price.

A roster spot is there for the taking behind burgeoning Melbourne-born star Kyrie Irving and recently acquired Jarrett Jack.
Australia's starting point guard at the London Olympics yesterday tweeted: "Thanks everyone for the support (and birthday wishes) - have a partial guarantee which means I still have to make the team at training camp."

The door is wide open now for Dellavedova, Cavs coach Mike Brown speaking highly of him and understandably concerned, given both Irving and Dion Waiters spent extended periods on the injured reserve list last season.

<!-- story-related story-sidebar -->Jack also is likely to spend time backing up the shooting guard spot, opening further opportunities for Dellavedova.
The Cavaliers' first pre-season game is against Milwaukee Bucks on October 8.

From Maryborough, "Delly" spent four years re-writing the record books at St.Mary's College of California, becoming the school's all-time leader in career points, assists, made three-pointers, free throw percentage (86 per cent), games started and games played.

The Gaels compiled a 105-28 record with Dellavedova, a starter in all four years, running the offence.

Each of his four-season assists totals rank top-10 all-time for West Coast Conference single-season assist records.
He also was WCC Player of the Year last year, a year in which he also started for the Boomers at the London Games.
At the Olympics, he had the chance to test himself against NBA players such as Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Tony Parker, Jose Calderon and Leon Barbosa.

Coach Brown is a fan of Dellavedova's "team-first" attitude and work ethic, which should hold him in good stead over the coming months.

If successful, Dellavedova would join Andrew Bogut (Golden State Warriors), Patty Mills and Aron Baynes (San Antonio Spurs) in the NBA.

He's officially in town. Was on my flight from Vegas tonight. He said this was his first time in Cleveland other than the pre-draft camp.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

I have never felt stronger about a player as I do Dellavedova...he is awful, we can do better

Dellavedova is not an nba level player

Can't create any separation from summer league let alone nba guards
doesn't get to the free throw line (not even once in summer league)
doesn't score efficiently (27% fg, 20% 3pt in summer league)
is a major liability defensively
3.0 apg to 2.7 to's in summer league

If you're using summer league stats to prove a point, I really can't take your argument seriously. Between the really small sample size, teams focusing on some players over others, rosters full of me-first players desperate to show a team something and get a look, and a general lack of any defined system, it's just about impossible to form a definitive impression of players. If you watched him play enough in college to form an opinion that's a different story, but...

I forgot to mention that he was flying on Southwest, so he must not of received that much of a guaranteed contract. :chuckles:

Also, he was sitting with the commoners in the exit row for maximum leg room. And I'm pretty sure he was surprised anyone recognized him, but hopefully now he knows that RCFers can spot a 3rd string point guard any day of the week. :chuckles:

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Funny similar story to above...and I was on a flight back from Vegas too.

Sitting about 3 rows behind the exit row on the aisle while the plane is almost boarded. I look up and see a familiar face coming towards me. He is asking to trade seats with a guy in the exit row (who happens to be sitting next to this real nice blonde). Ironically, I happen to be reading "Who's Your Caddy." I took the book from my parents place to read - it had been out for about 10 years. I look at the picture of the author on the book - Rick Reilly. Then I look up, and this dude looks just like him. In a hushed voice, I go "Hey Rick!" He didn't hear. Did it again, and he looks up at me (he was loading something in the overhead). I ask "Rick Reilly?" He says yes. I say "One second..." I had the book in the pouch on the seat. I pull it out (the book sicko's) to show him, and he laughs. He says pass it to me real quick. I reach it up to him and he sits down. About a minute later he gets up to hand it to me and shake my hand. He "appreciated the business" (me reading his book).

The reason he moved back to the exit row: he was originally in first class, but he wanted to sit next to his hot wife with the peons. Here is what he wrote:

Too bad, because those of us cool enough to open were treated to quite the pic.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Ok, so signed, 2 yr 1.3 mil but small guaranteed, how does that work?

Will wear number 16 according to most sites

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

So, our current 3rd PG on the roster is had a polished NCAA career, played in the Olympics, and in other National-Level tournaments, and someone is pissed about it?

Color me unsurprised.

I know plenty of "fast" guys that suck at defense too.

Defense is more than a skill, it is a DECISION...and plenty of guys just don't like making that choice.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

I think people are more worried about his offense. If he can't create separation, he won't be able to do any playmaking at all, he will be like Daniel Gibson.

But for a third pg, yeah, meh. Delay is going to come in and be a great locker room presence and work hard in practice.

It means the Cavs were willing to guarantee $100K of his contract to get him to come to the Cavs training camp. If they waive him, he still gets $100K. That's about the amount he'd earn if the Cavs keep him on the roster for all 8 preseason games + the first 11 regular season games. After that, he gets paid per game until they waive him, his contract runs out, or it's Jan 10th, 2014. On January 10th, all contracts become guaranteed for the rest of the season. His second season would be game to game until Jan 10th, 2015.

One little known rule is that up to three waived players from the Cavs training camp roster can be sent directly to the Cavs D-league team in Canton. So maybe the Cavs are looking for a 3rd string point guard. Or maybe the Cavs are trying to get the best point guard they can for Canton. We'll know in 38 days.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

From Finnan. Personally, I'm waiting for Dellavedova to show signs that he can use his intelligence to make winning plays against NBA competition. I have been waiting since summer league to see him have a really solid game. Opportunity is right there for him.

Cavs: Dellavedova in battle for third point guard

By Bob Finnan, The News-Herald & The Morning Journal

Posted: 10/10/13, 6:47 PM EDT |

For those who marvel at athletically gifted players, look elsewhere.

The Cavaliers are enamored with Australian Matthew Dellavedova, who is competing for the third point guard spot behind Kyrie Irving and Jarrett Jack.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Dellavedova signed a partially guaranteed, two-year, $1.3 million contract. He’ll likely make the final roster.

“I’m expecting to try to make the team,” he said. “That’s what I’m here to do.”

Despite being at a disadvantage athletically, Dellavedova’s intangibles are what separate him from some of the free-agent invitees.

“If I were to bet, I’d bet half my salary that I’d get a dunk before he does, and I’m not even playing anymore,” Cavs coach Mike Brown said. “He’s a non-athlete, but he gets everything out of his body you could hope or ask for. That’s all you want.”

The Cavs scouted him during the 2012 Olympics in London, as he played well for Australia.

“It’s definitely helped me,” Dellavedova said. “The international style is definitely a step up from college. They are men, so there’s a physical style. It’s helped my development.”

The Aussies, coached by new Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown, lost in the quarterfinals to the United States.

Dellavedova said Brett Brown paid as much attention to the defensive details as his coach with the Cavs. He said he’s picked up Mike Brown’s defensive system thus far.

“They’ve laid a very good foundation so far in training camp,” Dellavedova said.

Mike Brown said he was impressed with Dellavedova during a pre-draft workout at Cleveland Clinic Courts.

“By the end of the session, all five guys who were here for the session were listening to him,” he said. “He was telling them to do this, do that. All eyes were glued to him.

“He elevated that workout. Was he the most talented? No, he wasn’t the most talented guy. The leadership and intangible stuff, that’s hard to find. He’s an intelligent player. All the things you need to have a championship-level ball club, he brings to the table.”

Dellavedova, 22, said camp has been going well for him.

“(Being a floor leader is) definitely my strength, and knowing when to make the right play,” he said. “I scored a bit in college. I can shoot the 3. I can shoot a floater in the lane.”

He had two points and two rebounds in seven minutes against Milwaukee on Tuesday. He said he doesn’t know if he’ll play more minutes in the Orlando game at 7 p.m. Friday at Amway Center.

“I’ll be ready to go when my name is called,” he said.

He averaged 14.2 points and 5.6 assists in his four years at St. Mary’s University.
