Matthew Dellavedova

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

From Finnan. Personally, I'm waiting for Dellavedova to show signs that he can use his intelligence to make winning plays against NBA competition. I have been waiting since summer league to see him have a really solid game. Opportunity is right there for him.

Cavs: Dellavedova in battle for third point guard

For those who marvel at athletically gifted players, look elsewhere.

The Cavaliers are enamored with Australian Matthew Dellavedova, who is competing for the third point guard spot behind Kyrie Irving and Jarrett Jack.

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Dellavedova signed a partially guaranteed, two-year, $1.3 million contract. He’ll likely make the final roster.

“I’m expecting to try to make the team,” he said. “That’s what I’m here to do.”

Despite being at a disadvantage athletically, Dellavedova’s intangibles are what separate him from some of the free-agent invitees.

“If I were to bet, I’d bet half my salary that I’d get a dunk before he does, and I’m not even playing anymore,” Cavs coach Mike Brown said. “He’s a non-athlete, but he gets everything out of his body you could hope or ask for. That’s all you want.”

The Cavs scouted him during the 2012 Olympics in London, as he played well for Australia.

“It’s definitely helped me,” Dellavedova said. “The international style is definitely a step up from college. They are men, so there’s a physical style. It’s helped my development.”

The Aussies, coached by new Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown, lost in the quarterfinals to the United States.

Dellavedova said Brett Brown paid as much attention to the defensive details as his coach with the Cavs. He said he’s picked up Mike Brown’s defensive system thus far.

“They’ve laid a very good foundation so far in training camp,” Dellavedova said.

Mike Brown said he was impressed with Dellavedova during a pre-draft workout at Cleveland Clinic Courts.

“By the end of the session, all five guys who were here for the session were listening to him,” he said. “He was telling them to do this, do that. All eyes were glued to him.

“He elevated that workout. Was he the most talented? No, he wasn’t the most talented guy. The leadership and intangible stuff, that’s hard to find. He’s an intelligent player. All the things you need to have a championship-level ball club, he brings to the table.”

Dellavedova, 22, said camp has been going well for him.

“(Being a floor leader is) definitely my strength, and knowing when to make the right play,” he said. “I scored a bit in college. I can shoot the 3. I can shoot a floater in the lane.”

He had two points and two rebounds in seven minutes against Milwaukee on Tuesday. He said he doesn’t know if he’ll play more minutes in the Orlando game at 7 p.m. Friday at Amway Center.

“I’ll be ready to go when my name is called,” he said.

He averaged 14.2 points and 5.6 assists in his four years at St. Mary’s University.

could probably do a lot worse in a 3rd string PG than one that is a team first player, set on making those around him play better.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Playing a lot of 4th-quarter minutes, Dellavedova gave a good effort, esp. in a tough matchup with Oladipo. He didn't do anything flashy but did plenty of smart defensive things, didn't make dumb turnovers, ran the offense, and got the ball to the hot hand. Low-profile, mistake-free appearances where he doesn't seem too overmatched are what I thought we would see from him more often. He'll make the roster if he plays like that.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

I want Delly to make this team, I like this kid for a 3rd string PG. If you noticed after a timeout he's always the first one off the bench to give the guys on the court high five, he's always encouraging and a positive influence. He gives his all on the court, and is a leader. He also seems like a good dude, I will gladly take a positive influence like him on the end of the bench.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Delly had a strong 6 minutes at Orlando. His defense and leadership stood out, but his ability to control the game and grind out the win should not be underestimated. I think that some more experienced PGs would not have done as nice a job. The guy just knows how to win.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

i think he played great down the stretch. to stay in the league long term he needs to add a great 3 point shot, its really the only way to become and offensive threat

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Missed the game but saw the box, how did Delly go with more minutes tonight?

Sessions has made a career eating up guys like Dellavedova, and there was no Varejao or Bynum to clean up the mess tonght. That said, he made some good reads on offense and looked like he knew of to run a team from time to time.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Definitely no worse than Pargo or Sloan. Could be somewhat better depending on how much he manages to improve on defense.

im curious. does anyone know who he is competing for the third pg spot against

No one. He's basically a lock to make the roster, as I understand it.

Given that Mike Brown has said he wants Waiters to play exclusively SG, we don't really need to read between the lines to figure out that he's definitely got the inside track. Coach Brown though has also emphasized they will keep the best players, regardless of position. That may be true, but I suspect he said that in part to send the message that everyone in camp has a legitimate shot, and that the decision wasn't already made that the final two roster spots were Delly's and one of the bigs -- as most of us have been assuming.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

dellavedova seems to have only two challenges right now: beating out elliot williams (and he's not making the most of his time so far) and avoiding injuries.

on multiple occasions tonight he was telling his teammates what to do on defense (after plays). it didn't help them achieve it, but he obviously is aware of what the coaches want.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

It was nice to see him take and make a couple of shots, i was worried he might go the entire season without shooting when he was open. He's perfect 3rd string pg material, smart, gutsy and humble

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

he has a pretty solid body

36.4 minutes per game (4years)

from what i remember (I've been watching his games since he was a freshman) he rarely missed a game, maybe for a sore muscle/sick at best.

not injury prone at all.

He played through a bum ankle the last three or four weeks of his senior year. Killed his shooting and scoring numbers, but he was the only reason they made the tourney, also the only reason they beat Rchfield' s boys in the entry round. And that was when Rchfield had to start listening to me about the power of the Delly.
