National Media and other poster's 2023 Prospect Lists

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As someone who follows the draft process closely since the budgeted (and fair) era, this is wrong.

Yes, compared to NFL and especially NBA it's definitely more of a crapshoot, but it's not coincidence or luck that some teams draft and develop better players than others. I mean, isn't Cleveland known to be the college pitching factory?

There has been multiple examples over the past years where I or others (shout out to Willie Hood, who actually wanted Bobby Miller in that draft) had strong opinions and we're vocal for/against certain picks/non picks, especially in rd 1, so it's not hindsight for some of us is all I'm trying to say.
Cleveland is known to be a pitching factory because they DEVELOP the talent. We’re not going out and taking guys all the time who are at the top of everyone’s draft boards.

Every year... the picks by Cleveland over the first 180 or so picks in the draft..

some good..

some not quite...

The prospect ranking systems...at least most of the major ones...adhere partly to the there is no such thing as a pitching prospect theory. The injury/bust rate is simply too high. Thats why there are so few pitchers listed among top prospects.

They also tend to lean towards power hitters, imagined or otherwise. Notice how many write ups of prospects with power contain phrases, such as....

'Every tool except hit.'

'Strike outs are a concern.'

'If his approach allows him to....'

The rankers acknowledge their concerns, and then shrug.

Cleveland goes for big talent arms in the first they just didn't that year. Aiken, Espino, Hankins, Williams all recently. Weirdly and maybe this was your point most of their success has come from their mid-level development. That Tucker pick was criticized by a lot in the moment both here (maybe the board I migrated from), local, and national coverage of the draft. Right now he looks to be on possibly the Quentin Holmes level bad track.

I didn't think the Tucker pick was that good... Then again his older brother plays, so I was hoping that would help him develop...

Honestly in basically all the reports one of the most harped on "pluses" of his game was that he hung out with his brother and some other major leaguers to work on developing his game. WOOF! Oh and he was supposed to be an easy sign. Definitely one of the worst early picks in recent memory and not holding out much hope for him at this point. To his credit on development he has battled injuries. Sorry not trying to trash a kid chasing his dream, just the pick had critics and so far they seem to have been right.

He's still young and has time to correct things, but so far it's not looking good...

Especially since guys like Miller and Westburg went behind him... Both guys we have looked at trading for... Drew Romo is another guy a few picks later a guy like @Gson is trying to find a way to give up his arm and leg for... lol

You wanna get depressed? Try making an updated "Top 20" prospect list, taking into account that the following guys have or will shortly have graduated from eligibility - Gavin Wiliams, Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen, Tyler Freeman, Bo Naylor, Will Brennan, Gabe Arias, and Xzavion Curry
1 Rocchio
2 Brito
3 Espino
4 Chourio
5 Campbell
6 DeLauter
7 A. Martinez
8 Cantillo
9 Valera
10 Morris
11 Messick
12 Noel
13 Lipscomb
14 Antunoz
15 Halpin
16 J. Rodriguez
17 Lavastida
18 Dion
19 Nikhazy
20 Haijar

Half of these guys are coming off injuries or are only on here because of their pedigree. Going through 21-30 would be even more painful.

Carson Tucker is notably missing, as he would be unless I went to a "Top 80" list...

Schneeman has to kind of be in consideration and so does Pries if you have J. Rodriguez on the list...

I will do my list later after I get off of work

Also Nate Furman even though he is stinking after promotion, Dayan Frias maybe...

Rodriguez is 23.5 years old. Pries is about 2 years older and Schneemann is nearly 3 years older. I don't see them as prospects at this point.

I am personally not counting out either of consideration, but I get your meaning...

Frias absolutely, also Francisca, Benjamin, Antunez, D. Sharpe, Collado. Could make a case for Cairo and J. Burgos too

@Tondo I appreciate all your insight in these threads. There aren't enough quality resources when it comes to the MLB draft or even organizational prospect breakdowns beyond a basic list.

So, if I can pick your brain--based on your expertise and knowledge of the Guardians farm system, where would you rank Slider? Does he get put on the 40 this winter to avoid Rule 5?
