I agree somewhat with this, because I've never cared much about the R5.We shouldn’t perceive exceptions to be the rule and that is precisely how I perceive Rule 5 is getting over-blown.
To each his own I suppose.
If Pilkington isn't a lock then we don't have one. He'll be protected and rightfully so. Kid has pitched his ass of this year and there are plenty of fringe guys on the roster that can be sacrificed to make room for him IMO.Coming up with the 40 man roster has to be causing some gray hairs in the front office. Can we protect more than 7 guys?
locks are:
Valera
Freeman
Cantillo
Rocchio
Lavastida
Morris
I think Palacios is close to a lock. Pilkington I don’t think is a lock. Tena and Noel are pretty far away. Kwan and Oscar Gonzalez are outfielders that are close to ready, but are they worth protecting? Benson is a former top draft pick, do we risk the embarrassment of him succeeding with another organization (I would risk it)?
Tons of tough choices.
I expect one or two trades to clear some of these bubble guys out, to prevent losing them for nothing.
Clearly I'm not Bimbo, but I'd guess neither.Ok let’s put this to Bimbo…
Kwan or Oscar Gonzalez? Which would you protect?

A typo?What is rule 6?
A typo?
I have gradually warmed up to Kwan.If we let Kwan somehow slip away with all the results he's been putting up, for the sake of protecting some far off prospects that probably wouldn't even be taken, I better damn hope we're right on that one. It seems pretty easy to let OGon and Benson slip away though. All that Kwan does at every level is hit though.
Hopefully that's not seriously up for consideration and we are able to make some moves prior to R5 so that we won't have to be choosing between protecting Kwan and Noel, let's say.
My response was a bad joke.A bad joke.
I think there's a strong tendency toward people being slow to adjust their opinions of prospects. Prospect lists are based upon prospect lists with less focus on actual results. I do wonder what could possibly be in his profile that would make him fall apart at the MLB level unless it's something like not being able to catch up to high 90s stuff. What he has shown in the minors is elite contact despite the lack of physicality and supposedly he's a pretty good OF, especially compared to other names thrown around like OGon.I have gradually warmed up to Kwan.
Normally, Kwan would be the poster boy for my kind of foundational hitting profile.
Kwan was one of only two minor leaguers with a higher walk rate than K rate. He led all minor leaguers in BB/K ratio...and he had the lowest swinging strike rate (3.2%) by over a point and a half. If he swings at 100 pitches, he connects on almost 97 of them. Thats inconceivable.
He's a 5-9 version of Brantley, although he isn't as quiet in the batters box.
But nobody views him as a real prospect. Maybe the evaluators think that MLB pitchers will just knock the bat out of his hands.
This year he added some pop to his profile. In my latest rendition of my pre R5 40 man, I added him.
I've warmed up to him too CATS. I mentioned somewhere that he's actually a very well rounded offensive player who can get the bat to the ball. Another thing about Kwan is that he is very good defensively as well. If he gets exposed he'll get snatched up right quick. I hope he can stay or be dealt for a more proven corner bat. He just strikes me as one of those guys that would quickly make us all regret not keeping him around. Personally, I send all of HRam, Zimmer, and Mercado down the road before unprotecting Kwan. Just my $.02.I have gradually warmed up to Kwan.
