Rule 5 Talk 23

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think that's accurate. Viloria is a FA, and like MLB FA, he can be signed onto a 40 roster, so I guess all what's needed was an open spot on the 38 protection roster. He can be selected in the MLB phase, yes, but not the AAA phase.

What happened to Cervenka was that he was left off the 38 roster, because he was just a random MiLB FA signing. Viloria got a NRI, that should be different. Otherwise Viloria would be a no brainer to get selected in AAA R5. You can't just draft MiLB FA in that phase, otherwise Ray Burgos, D. MacKinnon and many others wouldn't be able to choose where they'll land. Makes no sense
But that is what has happened with others.

Another example was RHP Jon Duplantier. He signed as milb free agent on 12/3/21 with SFGisnts & got drafted 5 days later by the LADodgers.

Again, look at his MiLB transactions ... he was assigned to Richmond Flying Squirrels like the other guy which is a AA team. Viloria was specifically assigned to Columbus, so there must have been room on that 38-man roster or he would have gotten technically AA assignment until after the draft (but just spit-balling guessing a bit). It is just how teams deal with their FAs and chances of being picked (versus keeping space to pick again from other teams).

It would be absurd if every minors FA wouldn't be a le to sign between R5 deadline day and R5 draft, that's 3-4 weeks.

Teams sign MLB players every day and just put them on their 40 roster. That's how minors FA can be protected too from the AAA phase, by just putting them on the 38 AAA roster.

I guess the teams this happened to either didn't bother or had no space on the 38 AAA roster. That's my explanation

Hey SC, you wanted the official list ... it is without Viloria who can be taken if not added to the AAA roster (and is listed on Columbus website)
eligible.jpg

And, as we get to protect 38 in AAA -- here was the list that I started based on RR when you asked the first time
C - (4) +(2?) - Viloria, Plaz, Planchart, Ramirez, Amditis? and Rodriquez?
1B- (2) - Pries, Sanquintin
2B-(1?) - Bracho?
3B-(4)+(1?) - Frias, Rodriquez, Delgado, Fry, Scheeman(?)
SS - All are rostered
OF - (4)+(1?) Planez, J Rodriguez, Idrogo, Escabado, Holland(?)
So (14) + (5?) so far but not at our strength yet

SP (7) - Scott, Royalty, Hankins, Torres, S McCarthy, Sabrowski, W Vasquez
RP (17) - Miko, Misiaszek, Enright, Kelly, Broom, Pinto, Lingos, Daniels, Marman, Ponticelli, Benton, Jones, Hart, Labaut, Munoz, Morillo, Jerez

So based on counts 24 pitchers and 14 position with 5 question marks like Holland, Scheeman, Bracho, Amditis, Rodriquez ... there will be a few left off like Labuat, Hart and/or Jones (older A+/AA guys with mediocre years and keep younger guys like Morillo, Jerez, Munuz). But, at end of day, nothing will really hurt.
Here's, perhaps, an equally valuable/viable discussion on tomorrow's Rule V draft:

The two RP's, Misi and Miko, could be targets of other clubs.. imho..

Here is MLB Pipeline 11 person of Rule 5 interest (no Guardians) --
Canzone
Davidson
Erceg
Gorski
Lopez
Miller
Moore
Nunez
Nutof
Paniagua
Vodnik

Yeah ... all 6 guys are targets -- Hankins, Battenfield, Misi, Miko, Enright and Kelly. But, I was wondering if my 6-10 players drafted estimate from a few weeks ago will be off compared to 18 chosen in 2020 (few teams found more room than I thought). A better estimate maybe a little higher 10-11 but with 2 days to go (and possible waivers not announced yet though), here is a comparison of how open rosters were in 2020 compared to 2022 where 4 of the first 11 teams are still at 40 and thus no room (note these 2020 numbers are from Monday for Thursday draft).

The issue will be -- when the reliever market finally breaks free this year (bulk of team needs and just the #s), there will me more and deeper waiver guys who can be had and optioned. Compare that talent to a Misi, Kelly or Enright (maybe Miko) who would need to stay for the whole year and will never be a true high-flame throwing back-end guy and which may be a better strategy to get talent this year? Rule 5 or waivers that don't need to be returned even if a FA is signed at the guy is waived again (but player can choose FA after being waived twice)?

2020 -- Spaces in first 17 - 52 (ignoring Reds 9 openings)
1. Pirates (38) 2. Rangers (38) 3. Tigers (39) 4. Red Sox (38) 5. Orioles (38) 6. D-backs (39) 7. Royals (36) 8. Rockies (38) 9. Angels (34) 10. Mets (34) 11. Nationals (34) 12. Mariners (38) 13. Phillies (38) 14. Giants (35) 15. Brewers (35) 16. Astros (38) 17. Marlins (38) 18. Reds (31) 19. Cardinals (37) 20. Blue Jays (40) 21. Yankees (39) 22. Cubs (34) 23. White Sox (38) 24. Indians (37) 25. Braves (38) 26. A's (35) 27. Twins (35) 28. Padres (39) 29. Rays (39) 30. Dodgers (37)

2022 (first 18) - 26 open spaces (so less than 1/2 the space of 2020 with only few FA signings so far in this meeting - maybe 5 go in next 2 days to these teams as things heat up)
1. Nationals (55-107) - 38 2. A’s (60-102) - 37 3. Pirates (62-100) - 38 4. Reds (62-100) - 39 5. Royals (65-97) - 40 6. Tigers (66-96) - 39 7. Rangers (68-94) - 40 8. Rockies (68-94) - 39 9. Marlins (69-93) - 39 10. Angels (73-89) - 40 11. D-backs (74-88) - 40 12. Cubs (74-88) - 36 13. Twins (78-84) - 39 14. Red Sox (78-84) - 40 15. White Sox (81-81) - 36 16. Giants (81-81) - 38 17. Orioles (83-79) - 38 18. Brewers (86-76) - 38

Here are some little tidbits

From MLB pipeline ... "There have been some intriguing names coming up a bit in lobby talk, like Phillies lefty Erik Miller, Braves right-hander Victor Vodnik and Rays southpaw Jose Lopez."

Ari Alexander -- Royals Logan Porter c/1B is receiving significant interest

And, yes, technically we are still at 39, but they should get medicals/exam from Clinic either later today or Thursday/Friday on Bell, our 40 will be full once he signs the dotted line (which we can ask him to hold off as things move slowly this time of the year, no rush to get them in a uniform to play) but doubt we expect to draft anyone. A pick will mean that a trade is in the works.

And with Pirates signing 2 yesterday, there is another top 11 teams with a full 40 without a move announcement (5 of 11 teams).

The Rule 5 draft gets underway in about 10 minutes.....

Final prediction? We suffer one loss that will be returned or we trade away outright.

50% - Hankins
40% - Battenfield
9% - RP like Miko or Misa
1% - Fry or Pries

Tampa did that trade a little while ago to get to 39 ... did they do it to take Battenfield?

I still think 50/50 or less someone gets selected from us. Battenfield 60%, Hankins 30% and 10% Reliever (Miko, Misa, Enright...)

Note, there seems to be some teams with room but some teams like Guardians and Pitt filled up their 40 at the meetings so probably won't pick (even though selection not official). I think 6 of 11 teams are at or soon to be at 40. Pirates, As, Royals, Rangers, Angles, D-Backs ... again 8-11 total selections is my guess. Some playoff teams may select but it more than likely returned (thus who we lose is temporary).

So is there like a time allotment for this ?

Like 5 minutes per team or something ?

If I remember right is is more a immediate type of rolling selections (so 1-2 mins). But, TV may slow it down

Follow along here. As mentioned Thad Ward goes to the Nationals with the 1st pick.
