Rule 5 Talk 23

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
For those who don't follow Rule 5 (and should be other thread) ...
The majority of players picked are still pitchers and you always have a Badoo who can come out of nowhere but remember he was the 13th ranked Twins prospect too - other teams look for higher returns (not a mid 20 prospect of G Rodriquez and later for J Rodriquez) - probably why J got the callup to AA first (easier to hide).

And even if Badoo had a hot early 2021 before pitchers figured him out, most fall back to earth (-0.2 War this year and his 1st/2nd half OPS last year was .813/.715 thanks to a .367 BAbip in first half.

Odds are that one of our AA/AAA relief pitchers will be the ones going as we added all of our potential starters in Curry/Gaddis only needing to add Hankins now to protect the upside (leaving Torres off).

I think we still gotta find a way to protect Cantillo...

I dont think we will lose anyone that hasnt really played above A ball, but teams have their random player ranks, so its hard to know until we are in the off season. We added Noel last season because the rumors around him that there was a team going to take him.

Battenfield, Cantillo & Hankins all warrant consideration. Doubt all 3 are left exposed to the draft..

From that list...

I feel like we should be protecting Battenfield and Angel Martinez with no questions asked...

Cantillo and Hankins are on the short list, depending on medicals...

Then we have a ton of borderline guys... Johnathan Rodriguez, Gabriel Rodriguez, Micah Pries, Alexfri Planez, etc...

@BimboColesHair may be bad to ask since you may not be able to answer, but outside of possible Battenfield, Martinez, Cantillo and Hankins, who do you think Cleveland may look at protecting on the 40 man roster?

I'm not as sold on Peyton Battenfield but I am confident that 1 of Battenfield/ Cantillo/ Hankins will be protected.

I suspect if the CLE FO was as sold as you on Battenfield, 1 of the starts that went to Gaddis/ Curry/ Pilkington since mid-August would have gone to Peyton..

I get where you are coming from, but its hard to believe they will let a SP who had a sub 4 ERA at AAA for an entire season, be available for anyone to grab... If he isnt added to the 40 man, they will trade him to someone for another prospect farther away from MLB time... He's either on the 40 man or he is traded, you cannot let a guy like that walk.

I feel like Battenfield and MArtinez have to be protected and Cantillo and Hankins will be protected if they pass their medicals. IF they don't then they won't be added.

I am wondering who else we may target...

But, whoever they add, other than Hankins, has to be ready by May 2023 to be a MLB starter. For me, I look at they need:

3-4 .... BOR(future)/6th/7th(now) starters -- Pilk, McCarty, Gaddis, Curry, Cantillo, Battenfield (meaning 2-3 get left off, removed or traded knowing Allen and Burns and possibly Espino are ready around mid year as well and in next Rule 5 draft)

2-3 ... 7th/8th/9th relievers - Santos, Miko, Gaddis, Curry, Cantillo, McCarty, Misiaszek, Herrin, .... (I added a few here to show we have enough to sneak through Rule 5 with ease and be called up later in case of need)

I am leaving off Morris and Vargas as they are locks but where (Morris MLB Starter/Reliever and Vargas MLB/AAA). In addition, your first 6 relievers Clase, Kar, Stephan, Hentges, Sandlin, Morgan (are basic locks). 5 starters + Vargas, Morris + 6 reliever locks + 2-3 additional relievers and 3-4 additional starters = 19 (if 3+3 or 4+2 in those groupings) + Hankins = 20 of 40

Not true at all. If they didn't add him then they didn't have to worry about taking him off of it and exposing him if need be. Pilkington was added last season.

Meh on Battenfield... he's the kinda guy that teams might pick up in R5 to throw in the pen as a long reliever type but his results this year were quite bad and I wouldn't want to risk losing anything of value for him. And I disagree with @CDAV45 because if you're worried about having to take someone off the 40 man and pass them through the DFA process, you are not valuing them very highly in the first place.

If you add him to the roster in 2022 you've got:
If you still want him, he's on the roster, if you don't you have to pass him through DFA or trade

If you don't add him to the roster in 2022 you've got:
If you still want him, you can add him to the roster, if you don't think he's worth a spot you just have to pass him through R5 or trade

The only real difference is in what we do with him if we don't think he's worth the slot and R5 is comparatively better for us than DFA for that.

Interesting take on Ethan Hankins.. a 100 % lock, imho.. there is gold in that young man's lightning bolt of a right arm.. even if his ML career sees him getting experience out of the pen.. btw.. it will only be temporary until such time as he's fully honed his craft.. and is healthfully challenging for one of the scarce rotation spots in Cleveland..

W/R to some of the others..

Cantillo... you never like to give up on a lefty.. real progress has been shown this season..
Battenfield.. one way or the other.. he's toast..
Angel Martinez.. same class as Hankins: till death do us part..
Gabby-Rod... with so few RHH'ers, his value to the organization is climbing..

The fall out from a move or two by the CleFO will define many of the rest.. but, I wouldn't be surprised to see more than a couple of guys being selected.. to never return..
