Rule 5 Talk 23

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’ll be surprised if the Guardians lose anybody. Seems like it’ll be pretty easy to add the handful of important guys.
The stirring of the pot w/r to Forty Man Roster machinations.. is highly overrated.. overrated, indeed..

But ask how the Yankees would love to have had Whitlock (except for injury) and Stephens in their pen this year.

Stephan's development wouldn't have happened in New York... It was because he was around Blake Parker that he took the next step...

Now we do empathize the Rule 5 draft way more than we need to on here, but we also pay a ton of attention to not just the bigs but the minors as well on here, so we don't want the chance to lose guys we like in the minors either. (I really doubt there is anywhere else on the web that has a forum as good as this one at the end of the day?)

they had every chance to.. and discarded them.. why ask how much they would love to have them.. why not have them again?

Just replying to perceiving rule 5 as overrated. Most of times it amounts to nothing but sometimes a team can’t keep everyone and makes a bad choice that works in favor of others like Balt and Santander. They weren’t discarded but couldn’t sneak them through ...

Twins got a good one too...

Maybe only one player a season actually does anything for the Rule 5 on average...

Pitchers are the easiest to target since they can be used from the pen and/or spot starters while they develop... Teams who take position players, take guys where they have little to no guys at or near MLB ready. Pries is really the only guy I feel like someone would look at and he isnt that impressive...

Roberto Clemente
George Bell
Shane Victorino
Johan Santana
Josh Hamilton
Héctor Rondón
Kelly Gruber

Trevor Stephan

There may be a few others, but I don't care.

We have generally had an operating strategy of picking up a large quantity of young talent, hoping some of it will pan out. So far this has worked out pretty well. Losing some of this young talent for literally nothing would be way less than ideal and call into question mismanagement of the roster / failure to act earlier so we don't find ourselves in such a crunch. If nobody is taken like Derek predicts, then this point is moot but unless you know something that I don't I think it's pretty silly to just assume we will lose nothing of value when we are so crammed in R5 eligible types.

We just don't know how guys are ranked is the issue... We only know the national media and scouts not Cleveland internal rankings, so its hard to say who is where and who needs protected...

We added most of the guys we needed to protect during the season, but we still have to figure out the last few spots..

I don’t think we actually have a crunch, or at least not any more so than anyone else.

The important guys will get protected, and I don’t think we have any of the other types that are taken in the Rule 5 (injured position players like Santander and upper level starters to stash in the pen like Stephan).

We weren’t going to lose anyone last year after many freaked out for months on end, and I’d be surprised if we lose anyone this year.

No one made a bad choice with Santander.

Baltimore exposed a now closed loophole with an injured player.

There are only 2 absolute locks that must be added at this point (with who has already been added).

Angel Martinez and Joey Cantillo.

If Lenny Torres pitches well as a reliever in the AZ Fall League he’ll force his way on like Tena. What happens when every other team in the league sees you up close and personal.

Battenfield should be added. Good developmental season for him. But not necessarily a lock.

Hankins is like Cantillo last year, too hurt and too little on the books for teams to see where it’s hard to see someone taking him.

Miko and Misiaszek both deserve some consideration, but there is always an abundance of similar relievers available in the Rule 5.

And a toss up in Gabby Rodriguez and Johnathan Rodriguez.

They’ll be able to comfortably protect who they need to.

My biggest question is, who is on the roster bubble for 23 and do you think we will do a 3 for 1 type of deal to clear up a spots to protect the others?

We’ve been having this same conversation about needing a 3 for 1 trade for 40 man spots for 3 years now.

These things take care of themselves because players don’t always stick.

But yes, there’s going to come a time where they do a heavy prospect filled deal for MLB help. It won’t be to help the Rule 5 and protecting players though.

Today wasn't his day (but still early)

Most of your analysis from August has already happened. I assume the next 5 cuts from 41, which are implied below are Gose, Hedges, Maile, McCarty, Santos to get 3-4 adds of Martinez, Cantillo, Battenfield and a reliever (Miko, Misiaszek, Torres or keep Santos). Has Miller started to move towards this list (or at least trade) as Arias/Freeman in line for his utility position?

I assume from your other comment today - potential #5 starters if Plesac is traded are (FA/Trade, Morris, Pilk, Gaddis, Curry) thus I assume you see these guys are safe (not trying to defer Gaddis, like Mejia last year). But no McCarty as he is a deferral/trade candidate.

I guess my other question if you care to answer them, is how do they see Miko (big expectations going into year but hasn't shown it) and Gaddis (can his fastball/change be better suited to a Morgan type reliever as other starters jump him and thus making other relievers like Miko less of a need - or is he also moving towards a deferral candidate)?

Thanks

Naylor, Martinez, Curry, Brennan, Battenfield, Gaddis, Cantillo are must adds. 7 spots.
Miko, Hankins, Misiaszek are on the fence.
Fermin, Gabby Rodriguez, John Rodriguez, Lenny Torres are long shots.

At 42 with Morris and Gose on the 60 day. So let’s work down to 32 very realistically as we stand today, also making room for Morris to come off the 60 day.
Hedges is a free agent, 41.
Shaw has a club option, 40.
Maile DFA, 39.
Gose DFA, 38.
Castro DFA, 37.
Clement DFA, 36.
Reyes DFA, 35
McCarty DFA, 34
Call DFA, 33.
De los Santos DFA, 32.
