Rule 5 Talk 23

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just a note of reference for everyone: Gose is already on the 60 day IL which means he is already off the 40 man roster.
If he is not re-added to the roster (after the post-season concludes), it DOES NOT open a 40 man spot.
That 40 man spot of Gose has already been filled...

We have only one true FA on the roster now, which is Hedges...

I don't think it would be too hard to get Maile back into camp for next season even if we DFA him... If we go hey, Minor league with an invite to spring training and like a 1.2 million if he does, he will sign it. I doubt he gets a better offer from a team who could make the playoffs. I don't think Hedges gets a MLB deal either...

Right now, we have 39 under team control and it feels like we want to get the Roster down to 36-35 before the Rule 5 draft...

Not sure why a lot of people got Santos off there 40, I take him over someone like Gaddis or Torres

At the moment, I agree, he has done well for us this season... I don't see why he would be cut either

The moves that seem 100% apparent to clear 40 man spots.

Gose DFA - 40
Hedges FA - 39
Maile DFA - 38
McCarty DFA - 37

Gives them 3 spots to protect Martinez, Cantillo, and Battenfield. Those are the 3 highest priority guys.

I like Enyel, my preference wouldn't be to get rid of him. Shoot, think I may have been the only person on the forum wanting him to make the team out of Spring Training.

That means if they feel they need to protect an additional player or 2 you are getting into a tough spot choosing between young, controllable guys with options remaining. Not a lot of trades take place before the Rule 5 cutoff, but they'd have to get creative if they don't want to lose a Gaddis, Benson, Palacios, etc. for nothing.

DLS had a good season and is as good as it gets for a back of the bullpen arm. But he's also a regression candidate with no options left, so maybe he is a prime pre R5 trade candidate for an ACL/DSL lotto ticket that helps open up a spot for one of Misiaszek/Miko/Enright/Herrin

After R5, trade Plesac and Rosario to free up spots for a vet C (Hedges) and vet SP (Cookie).

Then trade one of Miller, Palacios, Benson etc to free up spot for Carlos Santana.

No way on Carlos Santana...

Brandon Drury though?

Also it would be Palacios first. Like the bat, but he sincerely has no room on this roster...

Any prospect we lose in the R5 for nothing is a loss, because we get nothing in return.

Plus, making a move to protect a prospect for the R5 that has to be reversed a month later is merely kicking the can down the road. We can, and probably will, drop both catchers, but we have to add at least one back before ST.

*******

I dont see how we can drop Santos to make room. Hes a legit hard throwing reliever that profiles to the back end of a bullpen. What spot you place him in the pecking order makes no difference.

Its like having seven legit SPs, the worst of which is a MOR. You dont drop him simply because he's #7 on a staff with an elite rotation.

*******

A problem for next year is that we have a gap between the present rotation and our (probably) top four SP prospects....Williams, Espino, Allen, and Bibee. None are ready now for MLB, and none need to be protected...yet. We have to protect some arms that would be available for at least the first half of 2023.

That becomes a bigger question if Plesac is traded, as many expect. The present candidates are Pilkington, Gaddis, Curry, and Morris...if you ignore Morris' injury history and lack of innings. IMO that means that Battenfield needs to be protected.

I wouldn't be unhappy if the FO packaged some prospects for a legit young MLB SP to go with Bieber, TMac, Quantrill, and Civale. While we may not NEED pitching in the org, adding one to next years rotation would make the team better.

The biggest axiom in baseball is that you can never have too much pitching...and if per chance you do have excess quality pitching, you can use it to buy whatever your team does need.

I do not think anyone specifically means to drop him. I know I said possibly trade him to Toronto after their debacle for a super lotto ticket prospect (someone 2 years from Rule 5 but hopefully more than they JC we gave up for Myers). And, as my son said about relievers, you can never really count on them year-2-year. Even though Myers got through TB, his location was way off from where Hedges was set up (maybe due to his hard throwing).

However, at the end of the day, we are splitting the 40 man roster 20/20 or 19/21 where we have 5 starter locks, 6 reliever locks (inc Morgan, Hentges, Sandlin) and Morris, Vargas are locks for 13 (with 6-7 spots to go between Cantillo, Battenfield, Pilkington, Curry, Gaddis, Santos, Miko, Hankins, Misiaszek). And with pitching, you rather error on more starters than relievers than you would expect as starters can fill in for relievers.

The question is who has more value to the Tribe short-term/ long-term. IF Santos is about equal to Miko, Misiaszek or Gaddis (as reliever types); then it is more who helps out more short-term and/or long-term. Tribe showed Sat that Santos is their 6th/7th guy already. Add in Vargas next year (at 100 mph) and maybe a Miko/Mis/Gaddis type, you have 8 guys even without Santos (Clase, Kar, Stephan, Hentges, Sandlin, Morgan, Vargas, Misiaszek-Loogy). You can also throw in Pilk and Morris into the 8th spot for length. Then the next question is, what need do we have? That is to fill in the 5th/6th and 7th starter roles until the big-3 are ready -- which means Gaddis, Curry, Pilk, Morris and Battenfield get thrown into the need category, more so than Santos. In addition, BOR starter has more trade value if developed at next deadline than a 6th inning reliever to fill other needs. Thus, trade Santos (if you need a 40 man spot) while he has value (which Curry and Gaddis have none of right now until they show their worth). Yet, if they think Miko, Hankins and Misiaszek can sneak through Rule 5 (thus not lose anything of value), then they will hold onto Santos till they see what their 8 relievers really look like come April.
