The Last of Us Spoiler Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Any explanation for why they didn't butcher the horse? Or the deer, for that matter? I mean, when you shoot something, you don't let it lay there. You field dress those things as soon as possible.

I guess that explains why they were starving and had to go for the long pig. They apparently sucked bad at hunting.

I think they took the deer or it was implied they did. When they shoot the horse, I think someone says take care of the horse when they go to find Joel.

Last of us has one of the best endings of any video game, and they absolutely nailed it here.

Given the unflinching brutality this show has portrayed, I am both excited and fearful for next season.

Great finale last night to a show that should clean up at the Emmy Awards.

I was kind of surprised watching the post-game where they said they wanted to make it clear to viewers that Ellie would have done it on her own. I actually thought that wasn't clear.

That is a topic that is explored in the second game. I expect we are going to see this in the following seasons as well.

But isn't the real question whether it is clear to Joel in that moment? I guess that would mean viewers by proxy as well.

Is it "supposed" to be clear at that moment that she would have agreed, or was it left ambiguous until the second game?

I don't know if it's as much as it being "clear" to Joel rather than him wanting to believe he made the right choice and one that Ellie would have agreed with.

Again, I don't want to spoil anything for people that haven't played the games... but you can bet that this will be a topic that will be revisited again.

From what I gather, his actions are the subject of a lot of debate among game fans. I can definitely see that.

She literally says earlier in the episode that she can’t have everything she went through be for nothing. I think it’s fairly clear that she would have sacrificed herself to save humanity. The problem is that no one made the choice hers.

It is definitely implied that Joel knew that Ellie would have wanted to sacrifice herself

Otherwise he wouldn't have lied to her about what truly happened. Also after seeing the giraffes (and neither knew at the time that Ellie would need to die) Joel offered that they could abandon their search for the Fireflies and return back to Tommy in Jackson. Ellie rebuffed that idea and said something along the lines of "everything we've been through, it has to have been for something"

Its amazing how neither marlene or joel gave a fuck what ellie wanted. Both were wrong by not involving her in the decision.

But when she says that, she has absolutely no idea that anyone plans to dismember her. As far as she and Joel know, they'll just need a blood sample, or to run some tests.

If Joel thought she wouldn't have wanted to go through with it, he wouldn't have swore to her at the end of the episode.

Ultimately, Joel is guilty of the same thing as Marlene.

Otherwise he wouldn't have lied to her about what truly happened.

There's a bit of distance between "I didn't think you wanted to be murdered" and " and "I killed all those people including Marlene."

It also could be that he was just unsure about what she would have chosen, and so lied to her in case he got it wrong.

Again, that is in the context of simply turning around without finishing the journey. Neither she nor Joel were aware that point that she was going to have to be killed.

You guys may be seeing this through the prism of knowing what she expressed later in the story, or maybe stronger hints that were given in the first game. But to a viewer who didn't know either of those things when I was watching it, it certainly wasn't clear to me at the time Joel was making that decision that she would have agreed.

There also is the additional thumb on the scale of the brutality that Joel ended up using to free her, which seem to hint at the writers siding with one choice over the other. I had no idea that was going to happen, and thought he might have just escaped out of there with her with minimal bloodshed, and that she might have thanked him for rescuing her as they fled together. Maybe next season was going to be about them being pursued - I just didn't know.
