Well Germany did win by two goals. They kind of did what they had to IMO. They were never going to make up that 8 goal difference versus Spain. They needed the Spaniards to win or draw which should’ve happened.

They fucked around and lost to Japan and fucked around and drew with Spain.. they deserved to go home.

VAR overturning that ruling in the Japan/Spain game cost Germany.

It feels good because they're an underdog, but the call on the field was that the ball was out and there has been absolutely nothing to show that there was sufficient evidence to change that call.

In fact, there's a pretty clear picture of at least a good chunk of the ball being over the line. I understand the ball curves and there's a chance the very widest part of the ball was still on the line (imaginary line extending to the sky) but..again, the call on the field was it was out. You can't tell me one of those views we've seen was enough to change that.

I think this WC is a lesson that fans assuming USA should have a shot to really go far in 2026…

You just never know.

Getting to knockout is not a given if you’re talented. Lots of random variables

It was damn close but no fucking way it should have been overturned. If it was in it was in by a mm or 2.

Are we talking about this play?

Are people arguing that the ball was out of play and the goal should've been disallowed?

Ball is clearly in play.

(Sorry if this isn't what you're talking about--had work come up and missed the end of both matches. Assumed that Spain was gonna cruise after being up 1-0 and absolutely dominating. Boy are my German colleagues going to be pissed)

Yes. The call was out of bounds. The ball is clearly not "in play" as it took a computer to determined it was in by... Edited centimeters.

Maybe we in America just have the strangest replay rules ever, but there is clearly not video evidence to over turn this call.

Edit the computer rendering I have seen shows a very very small portion of the ball in bounds. Like possibly half an inch of diameter in.

At this point in time I think soccer really needs to update it's rules for the 21st century. Ball is out when bottom is across the line, Offsides is feet, etc. It's insane to use a computer to determine to make calls based on rules 100s of years old

I'm guessing that there actually was no call at this instant, and they ruled out of bounds after the goal was scored?

Was it a call from the head referee, or did he look over to the line judge?

Either way, if the whistle blew before the goal, then obviously it shouldn't be a goal. If the line judge's flag went up before the goal was scored, it shouldn't be a goal.

I'm assuming therefore that no call was made, the goal was scored, and then there was a call of out of bounds.

The ball is clearly not "in play" as it took a computer to determined it was in by... Millimeters.
Maybe it's just that I played/reffed forever, but on first watch of that video in the first Tweet I said that's in. I think it's close, but it's pretty easy to get right--especially with replay.

I think there is clear video evidence. It's the right call. Ball was in play. Goal counts. The only reason the call on the field should hold weight is if it impacted the players on the pitch--and assuming the call wasn't made until after the goal, then it clearly did not.

Brother, literally in both of the tweets you posted the people in the tweets are saying its out of play lol.

The author of second tweet is saying its out play.

In the video, Klatenburg, the ref analyst for fox, is saying it's out of play as he's watching the video.

There is no way on Earth you can argue that it's "clear" that the ball is in play.

It's possible that it stayed in play, but we're talking tiny little centimeters here based on those replays. Way to close to say that's clear evidence.

I didnt see it live, only read about it. The refs got together after the play and determined the ball to be out initial ruling.

then they went to VAR. Im trying to find the computer graphic that showed how much of the ball was in. It was in but like i said it was half of inch of diameter, basically. I agree i am all about getting the call right. the ball was absolutely technically in, but holy shit. This "technically right is the best type of right" is more than a bit frustrating. Especially as we are relying on computers for accuracy which is absolutely 100% determined by a person.

This entire thing has really thrown me off of getting rid of umpires in baseball. There are going to be full teams thrown out of games because its going to be determined that the stitch of the ball hit the ball strike line and its ruled for the stitch not the 99.9% of the ball.

Lots of people can be wrong.

Didn't think there was doubt after seeing it once.

I'm surprised there's this much controversy.

I'd be more upset if the refs fucked this up and couldn't use replay to get it right

Seems like there is a flu bug attacking the Dutch team, could be the luck we need to advance tomorrow!

Ghana subbing in the 97th minute down 2-0 to keep Uruguay from advancing for revenge from 2010 is just great.

Serbia with awful sportsmanship at the end of that one. Good riddance to them.

And Christian Pulisic is available to play for the US. Though that really shouldn't come as a surprise
