I've been replaying Arkham Asylum. What a great fucking game. I told myself when I started this replay that I was going to ignore the Riddler challenges and just power through the game. I'm currently at around 75% riddles solved. I am a degenerate.
I may be inspired to replay all four games. Outside of them turning the final game into Tank Simulator for way too much of the run time, it's an incredible series. Even the unofficial Origins tells a really great Batman story, although it's buggier than the Rocksteady releases.
But man, nearly everything about Arkham Asylum is perfect. Mark Hamill as Joker. Kevin Conroy as Batman. Some great Scarecrow sequences. Fun boss fights. Graphics that still hold up, largely due to the great art design. A perfect mix of Batman kicking ass and Batman hiding in the shadows and silently taking out a room full of red shirts, plus some puzzle solving via the Riddler content. The only misstep is the final boss fight with Joker, which felt way off the mark for the character. I've long thought that this game and God of War 3 should have swapped endings, with Batman just beating the ever-loving shit out of Joker after being put through a night of hell with countless civilian and police casualties and Joker just laughing at having won in his own way.
Overall, though, this is an all-timer. I'd rate the second game just a bit above it, but both games are classics.
