Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Great to read that your child is doing ok.

Don't fret about crawling at all.. My niece NEVER crawled. She butt scooted across the floor. I told other family members the kid was smart.. Figured out a way for her ass to get scratched without doing herself or having one of us do it..

Then 1 day she stood up & started staggering around/ walking.

She started her senior yr of high school this past Monday (lives in that state up north) & has already signed a letter of intent to play softball in college next season.
I bought a cap to support her team.

This was awesome to read! Yeah she's adjusted to a one year old now (went by so fast). We're going to her development clinic this Wednesday for a checkup with all her doctors (she has a ton that want to follow her for 5-10 years due to what happened during birth). The doctors said she's at risk for cerebral palsy (amongst other things) and that she might never be a soccer captain, but should be able to walk in some form.

She eventually started to army crawl and then two weeks ago, she randomly started to crawl on her hands and knees. So now she's zooming around everywhere. Early intervention thinks she's doing well, so this Wednesday will be a big visit. We'll talk about how she's doing and the next steps for standing and walking. She's been a fighter for her whole life so I'm expecting her to be a soccer captain and let the doctor's know she did it ;)

Great advice!

What I've learned is, as long as the little one is more or less doing the general principle of what's expected for their age, it's fine.

Butt scooting and crawling? They're still moving, so it's all good!

For my son, I used to fret about pointing; he RARELY points. He hates doing it. He'd rather just use his whole hand to gesture. I did get him to point at some pictures in books just so he could reach the milestone, but now he's back to his preference of using his whole hand to touch pictures. He also does the same with identifying body parts -- he'll grab his head rather than point to it, or grab his arm, feet, toes, etc. The important thing is, he's gesturing and communicating. So what if it's not usually with the index finger?

I didn’t know pointing was a thing.
I didn't, either, until I had the little one. I asked my dad when I started pointing, and he says he has no idea. Not sure those of us who grew up in the 20th century were aware it was a thing. Apparently it's been a big milestone now for about 20 years and is believed to be related to developing communication, such as joint attention.

As far as communication, I only knew about talking (duh).

Never thought to look out for anything with that either, though I understand that parents do. And why they could/should.

I was much more focused on milestones with our son. With our daughter, we really haven’t paid much attention to any of them. She’s very much pushed herself along.

I think we all worry about various heritable diseases/disorders though.

I have schizophrenia. but I want kids. But i probably shouldn't right?

Why wouldn't you?

There is no concrete demonstrative link between heritability of schizophrenia. There is not much of an increase in likelihood between parents and offspring any more than having other more distant relatives with a history of the disorder.

really?

That there's a 50% or 25% chance my kids will get it.
That is not the case, whereas it is true that the genes are highly heritable, the chances of the child developing schizophrenia are not 25%-50% according to recent research.

Scientists still don't know what activates the genes that cause the disorder.

While the chances are increased, the numbers I have seen are closer to 15% than 50%.

Man, what a rush. I was working from home today and kept baby girl home. I saw her going up and down and got up from the table to get a better look. Sure enough, she was standing up on her own. A couple hours later she took her first steps and was walking all over the place, constantly standing up on her own too. She didn’t do any of that before today.

Felt good to see because I was taking her to Nationwide Childrens tomorrow for them to evaluate her and work on it with her. But now I’m pretty confident she’s just a bit of a late walker and expect her to be full on walking any day.
