I appreciate your take and I have no agenda except seeing a team I’ve followed 51 years succeed. When I say one dimensional I’m talking about a more than just a scorer. I really like the kid was happy we drafted him just not at a Max deal.
I disagree with the take that Collin is one dimensional. He is an elite scorer, but he has other skills. Hi defensive numbers are bad, but so is the rest of the team, except for Stevens and Thomas. Against other high octane guards, he has done well defensively. He is relentless, plays high minutes without bitching about it.

I think there is a part of our community that simply believes Sexton is too short/small to be a real all star. They have history on their side because there are damn few his size that get there. Detroit ran a short back court during their best years (Thomas, Dumars), but often we see guards like sexton become pretty OK but not winning players or sixth man microwave options. The (Ben and Eric) Gordons are in my opinion Sexton's most likely career path. But Sexton is still getting better, and in my mind he has more team leadership in him and will to win than either of those guys, which is exactly what I saw in the Thomas and Dumars pair. The comparison to Rose is not entirely wrong either. I think Healthy Rose is more Collins ceiling. Sexton is a better three point shooter and appears to be more durable. If he improves again next year, then Rose is a good parallel.

I think he gets a max deal from someone, and I think that is probably us. He is well fitted to a Cleveland market, with his never say die attitude. Is he the best Max deal ever? No. But I think its not a terrible decision for us.

As for Allen, that may be a different story. Hartenstein has a shot to beat him out at Center, because he defends better and passes better. But Hart will have to clean up the turnovers and fouls. The Cavs have demonstrated that they can acquire functional big men for a song, so if Allen's attitude does not match Sextons, we dont max him.

Garland we have a bit to chew on it. This year he showed us that the front office was not crazy to pick him. Can he sustain that growth and remain healthy? He also needs to find some heart defensively. While his numbers are not all that different from Sexton, his attitude on the floor is not competitve. I went to only one game this year so, small sample. But I saw them pick on Garland all night long, and he just gave it up.

I was thinking more of our team in the late 80s. That’s how you build a team.
yeah I am not old enough to remember the 80's myself but I get that.
There is no point in drafting developmental players in the lottery
if you don't actually plan on keeping the ones that develop.

We we’re able to draft Daugherty and Harper & trade for Price in 1986. I didn’t see those kinds of players available when Koby was drafting the past three years. Drafting SGA and Halliburton might have been better but all three of our picks were reasonable picks.

It's not crushing but it won't allow them to make free agency moves outside the exceptions. We will have Sexton's contract extension and Love's current contract for 1 year. Once Sexton, Allen, and Garland's new contracts are all on the books, Love's would have expired.

I think the question isn't to pay Sexton, Allen, or Garland but what to pay them. If they can get Sexton in below the max and try to get Allen closer to the 15 million, they would be in alot better position.

I think Allen's contract is the key,,,his play was so up and down last year...initial stretch was great and then looked like he
didn't give a shit. Could they max Sexton down the road and just let Allen go and look for someone to pair with Hartenstein?
I don't know its all a gamble.

I think the GM will not care about what he acted like as far as not giving two shits when the season was lost.
We saw a lot of that from Darius and some even from Sexton defensively but nobody is talking about it.

that article is terrifyingly bad "front office in Cleveland is desperately trying to figure out to build a winning roster" when I read this shit followed by " include Collin Sexton in what is almost certainly going to be an offseason of upheaval", I know the writer is full of shit & trying to predict the future, based on the ongoing misinterpretation by outsiders, of a rebuild timeline, coming off year after year of finals trips, with none other than the Goat himself. Sexton is at least on par with the best player on the team even if people don't agree the separation is obvious, assuming he is getting traded, because Garland can run an offense or the Cavs are desperate to be stuck in mediocrity is really dumb stuff.
They need to pay Sexton and if anything don't overpay a center imo

Opposing GM's circling around Koby and the hapless Cavs hoping they give away Sexton like they did KPJ (and Clarkson and Kyrie before that).

I wouldn't lump Clarkson into the players we gave away. He was an expiring and didn't mesh with anyone but Nance. At the time he was more of a road block to continuing to develop Sexton, Garland, and KPJ than anything.

What I'd say is Koby wasted alot of development minutes by keeping Clarkson all that time to just get two 2nd round picks back. He probably could have gotten similar value anytime for Clarkson and we might have been able to use those minutes to develop someone else that had a future with the team.

Imo that's exactly what's going on right now. And there are some people - who i used to think were savvy enough to know better - who are parroting this "trade Sexton" crap on a regular basis.

How about this trade?

Cleveland receives: Aaron Holiday, Justin Holiday & 12th pick

Indiana receives: Darius Garland

Why?

Cleveland solves it's point guard issue by dealing Garland. In return they receive another point guard who is better suited in a 6th man role, a good role player in Justin & a lotto pick in this years strong draft.

Indiana gets a starting caliber point guard which they lack in their roster.
