The official start Luke Jackson thread

With newble in the lineup, yes we get defense but where is the offense coming from in our backcourt? it would be like playing 3 of 5 basketball. Ive seen luke hit the three, drive through the lane and make some smart passes. I even saw some defense from him. Start him and bring amon off the bench.

Where's the defense coming from you ask??? LeBron James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Drew Gooden. They are the No 1, 2 and 3 options, Newble and Snow take open looks. Off the bench, you've got Jackson, Marshall, Jones (sometimes) to shoot the ball. I think a starting line-up of Big Z, Gooden, LeBron, Newble and Snow is a very well balanced line-up.

Not in terms of outside shooting. The only who can hit the 3 is Lebron and he's not going to be getting open looks

This thread is long overdue.

If Luke Jackson gets starter minutes, I think I would have the biggest headache watching that boy give the ball to the other team on every other play.

We waived a player and opened a spot up for a SG. I hope Danny Ferry is working on that right now.

Newble isn't a terrible outside shooter, he just needs to get used to the way he played at the end of last season, he was shooting 3's at a 49% clip. I doubt he would do that good again but i think 38-45 percent towards the end of the season isn't out of the question if he gets comfortable again taking those wide open 3's. Season end his percentage would be great if it was 35%.

I think Jones will continue to start, Brown won't take him out of the starting lineup.

Who gives a damn about the 3-point shooting. I don't. Take that ball to the basket. 3-pointers only need to be taken when they are open. But they need to be pounding that ball inside the paint, getting easy baskets. I don't care if we don't ever shoot another 3 pointer again, because if we get to the basket, we don't need to shoot 3's, because the result of driving to the basket should be an easy 2 points or a trip to the free throw line. Then down the other end, you force the other team shoot 3-pointers.

TAKE THAT BALL TO THE BASKET!!!!!!!!!

If Newble starts, then starting Marshall in place of Gooden would help by giving the team another outside threat and will greatly open things up for both z and lebron. It is also probably our best defensive lineup.

Snow/Newble/LeBron/Marshall/Z

Keeping Marshall in the lineup and substituting Luke for Newble would be my preference.

Snow/Luke/LeBron/Marshall/Z

Jones/Newble/Gooden would be the first subs

If Newble starts, then starting Marshall in place of Gooden

We have discussed this from precamp to present with the same result. Gooden brings an active big body inside that can challenge the leagues power forwards night in and night out. Much has been made of his defensive challenges, but he gets an A for effort and he has improved every year. This guys is playing for a contract and yet he has taken on his role as the fourth offensive option with focus and energy. I believe Gooden will start until we trade him. And if we trade him he will start wherever he goes.

You can't take the ball to the basket without outside shooting: see last year where Lebron got triple teamed when he put the ball on the floor and teams played a sagging defense daring guys like Newble to shoot the 3. Do you need to look for the 3: NO but you do need the capability to hit the jumper.

That being said I would be Ok with Newble starting preferably with Marshall starting. I'm one of the few Gooden fans on this board and think in no way that he deserved to be benched but it's a better fit to have Marshall starting if Newble and Snow are playing.

Of course, need to get Luke to around 15 minutes a game :)

The Cavs can't go with a Newble/Snow combo starting in the backcourt. You have to have at least some threat of perimeter shooting and a scoring threat at G. You need that to help space the floor, make the offense run more efficiently, and prevent the double and triple teams of LeBron and Z. The driving lines won't be there as much as teams will pack it inside daring Snow and Newble to consistently hit a perimeter shot.

As terrible as Jones has been playing, the Cavs almost have to continue to start him for at least the threat of an outside shot he provides. That doesn't mean Jones continues to deserve big minutes though.

Jackson should now be getting a minimum of 10-12 minutes a game from Mike Brown. There's no excuse or reason why he shouldn't now get regular consistent time. Jones and Newble haven't exactly been providing big time quality minutes. Now is the perfect time to develop your young talent instead of continuing to stick with veterans who have proven to only be average players at best. This young talent also has the ability to provide what is needed with Hughes out of the lineup.

As much as I despise Jones, at present we should continue to start him. Like Narl said, if he isn't shooting the ball well, minimise his minutes, which would then allow Jackson some burn. If Luke is playing decent in his first stint, there is no reason why Brown should not play him in the 2nd.

It's half way through the third quarter and I'm really pissed off. Luke has earned minutes and he's gotten squat - instead D. Jones is getting all the minutes and is again playing piss poor D while missing 3's

Snow, Jones, Newble and Wilks were so dominant tonight that I can see why Mike Brown wouldn't feel the need to give Luke or Sasha a chance--just kidding.

I wrote in the game thread how Snow, Jones, Newble and Wilks shot a combined 4-16, scored a combined 11 points and only dished off a combined 4 assists. They also weren't exactly doing a great job defensively on the Knicks G's. That type of production can't continue.
There is absolutely no reason why Luke and/or Sasha shouldn't be given a chance to get some playing time right now. On the rare occasions those 2 have gotten some extended minutes they have shown some ability to score and create offense for themselves. Those qualities are needed badly from Cavs G's now with Hughes out. The lack of offense or even threat of offense from the Cavs veteran G's is really bogging down the offense now. Something new needs to at least be tried.

Are Luke or Sasha the answer? Who knows? But maybe it's time the Cavs try to find out. Neither has been given a complete, fair opportunity since they've been Cavs.

I think we can leave Wilks and Snow out of this discussion. They are bringing a reasonable effort to the floor each game, and not letting us down. The two guard spot though is disturbingly ineffective. Jones is just horrible when he is not shooting well. He hardly earns respect on the floor for his jumper. Newble is as advertised and producing very little on the offensive end.

This leaves our next alternatives of Jackson and Pavlovic. These youngens have some offensive abilility and are better defenders then Jones. It only is a matter of time before Browns cracks and his hand is forced to play them. Lets hope it is sooner rather then later.

Luke was in for less then a minute tonight.... :thumbdown

I guess if he dropped 20 it would go unnoticed... Mike Brown's dumb ass glasses are foggin' up...
