BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ah then nope I just read it wrong if you're right. I just assumed she meant the Bears front office because they appear to be trying to construct a team composed entirely of tight ends.
I read it the way you did the first time through. Then I remembered its one of her most common phrases in her reporting.

(Pat is worth more than that, if we're being honest)

it ultimately comes down to a team’s cap projection. I am sure they have put lots of thought into it. I would guess it’s totally worth it but I don’t have the data.

Honestly I think it’s good for both sides from what I see.

Probably, although prime LeBron's underpaidness was likely much higher.

Put it this way, the Chiefs were able to get by for the stretch with Matt Moore, thanks to the Walrus system, whereas subtracting LeBron from the Cavs has, time and again, essentially been like taking the engine out of a car.

Edit, apparent full year-by-year details:

Looks like 2022, the first year after the 2021 5th year option, is lowballed to account for a cap cratering.

11M is a lot more of an attractive trade piece than 15M. No way someone would take that if we had to move him.

Vernon's 15.25M was fully non-guaranteed. Anyone acquiring him could have cut him at any time without owing him a dollar.

He was a much more valuable trade piece before today IMO. This decision almost 100% locks Vernon into being one of the Browns starting EDGE defenders in 2020.

Does it reduce his cap hit, though? There had to be justification for the new terms from the Browns' perspective. We knew they weren't releasing Vernon and that he'd be on this team in some capacity this season.

Huh?

There were plenty of people here thinking we'd cut him if we had a better option.

This move appears to be us committing to Vernon as being our option. The Clowney dream is likely dead.

Pretty significantly reduces his cap hit.

That 7M signing bonus can be prorated across 5 years if I’m not mistaken.

Indeed. The Browns saved 4.25M on their 2020 cap.

Basically the Browns needed to hold off on guaranteeing Vernon for as long as possible because they would have straight released him had they been able to sign Clowney.
