He was brilliant moving without the ball in this one. That and his ability to get to the line, have been massive developments this season.

Last season he was 40th in the league for personal fouls drawn per game with 3.9. This year he's 15th with 5.2 per game. Even if it's only side out it helps us get into the bonus more quickly. He's really becoming an elite offensive player and he's only 22 years old.

I dont know whether it was Buckner whispering in Collin's ear or Collin reading our criticism of him from the last two games...

But he played EXACTLY how we needed him to play tonight and moving forward;

  • off the ball and constantly moving on offense to get open
  • Making old ass Garrett Temple move his legs on defense and using his energy and speed to keep the defense off balanced when the ball found him in our offense (very Donovan Mitchell-esque on the offensive end).
  • Creating quite a few shots for teammates and found them once he got rolling as a scoring threat in the half court
I didnt want to win this game, but seeing Collin and Darius playing off each other in the roles that naturally fit them was worth a little more anxiety on lottery night.

I think we are locked into the 6th spot heading into lotto night.

OKC and Orlando are on intentional and injury fueled free falls. We will not catch them for 4th or 5th slot.

WAS and TOR are doing their best to peak and make the play in. Don’t think we’ll be consistent enough to move up in that direction either. So good or bad for the next 15+ games, I think we’re locked in at 6 and any lotto anxiety is all about the actual lottery drawing and not our position.

Thank you for typing this brotha

I'm a lifelong Cav fan and I cant help but feel like we're going to try everything in our power to get the final play-in spot, fall short, and somehow draft 8th or 9th in a 7 blue-chipper draft

I'm conditioned for this. I watched Brad Daugherty retire at in his prime at 28 (still havent forgiven him)

Isn’t that what happened 3 years ago when our Brooklyn pick was fighting nothing to lose and it was good talented 7 player draft and we ended up the 8 spot and drafting Sexton :acne: Better yet Sexton has the best 3 point percentage than Luka Magic, Young, and JJJ at 38.7% in his career.

He is also shooting 48.5% from the field this year which is impressive. His 3pt FGs attempts have increased each year but I am sure he will look to shoot more as his career progresses.

the siren song of Nascar was understandably too much to resist.

Collin off the ball and cutting w/o the ball is dangerous vs anyone, love when he does it. Collin off the ball and cutting vs a Bulls team w/o Zach Lavine and who is clearly booking summer vacation plans during timeouts is off the charts.

I'm thinking the draft will basically make the decision on this backcourt's future. I still don't think they keep both Garland and Sexton together long term.

Very surprising and disappointing to me that more Cavs fans aren't embracing this guy.
It is not about embracing Colin. No one questions his dedication to the game, his natural talent or even what he has done during his time in Cleveland.

It is about trying to determine the best path forward for the organization and how Colin's fits into the future.

Can you build a franchise around a 6'1" shooting guard? If you give a guy like Colin a max deal in in 2023, does he provide enough to offset the opportunity costs of having that kind of money tied up in one player?

Those types of questions are not being asked because Cavs fans are not embracing Colin, rather, they are being asked because the Cavs are not a good nor are they close to being a good basketball team.

The discussion is simple. Colin plays for a bad team. On bad teams, someone has to take shots and score points. Colin is both the primary shot-taker and scorer on said bad team. Trying to figure out how that translates to a good team is certainly fair especially since you also have determine how to allocate limited future resources (salary cap).

Here’s how much we have committed in salary for 2023-24: $0.

Our four highest paid players are Love, Prince, Nance and Cedi. Other than possibly Nance none of those four are worthy of significant future cap space beyond their current contracts.

Regarding the younger players we have four RFAs in each of the next four years: Allen, Sexton, Garland and Okoro. Hartenstein has a player option. The rest of the roster is marginal including Windler, Wade, Stevens et al and I don’t really care about any of them in this discussion.

Our problem isn’t limited cap space going forward. It’s that we have limited talent worth paying.

Collin is going to get paid by the Cleveland Cavaliers unless he’s traded for better value, which I don’t think is likely. Allen will get paid. Garland will get paid. In my opinion Okoro will get paid. They won’t all get max contracts but we are going to keep our young talent core unless we trade a la Kevin Johnson for Larry Nance Sr.

The fact that Collin plays for a bad team means he has to take more and worse shots than he would otherwise. On a good team he’d be far more efficient, as would Garland. Notice how they were much more efficient last night with help from the rest of the team.

They are also showing consistent improvement. Okoro is showing inconsistent improvement but he’s a rookie playing way more minutes than you’d like to see because the rest of the team is bad. We need more time to see how good these kids are. The good news is that the team is willing to be patient even if some of the fans are not.

That's why efficiency is important. If someone can score efficiently, they can play on a good team or a bad team. And if they're already scoring efficiently on a bad team, I can just imagine the improvement playing with other offensive threats around him.

THIS! best take on the salary cap situation and overall plan + timeline of the front office to retain talent.

i also think the front office won't offer max deals to any of them. allen will get market price at 15-20M per year. unless sexton becomes a 28 ppg scorer with 5 apg he won't get the max.

Nice post, but:

1) I don't believe the question about "building a franchise" around him is the right question to ask. You don't have to build a team around him specifically to retain him as a core element of the team moving forward.

2) He's not a volume scorer putting up lots of inefficient points on a bad team. He's been extremely efficient. He's also developing a much improved ability to play off the ball, which would really help him maintain that productivity and efficiency even on a really good team.
