We’re not to discuss an official team press release that just came out this evening about that very thing?

Or is it fair game to discuss potential NEW names but we’re just not to debate/discuss the merits of WHETHER the current name should be changed or not

Do we have a thread for the name change? I know you want to stay away from politics and other stuff like that, but within the next 5 years or so, something with the teams name will change because of the political pressure on MLB and the Indians to change it.

Start one in the politics forum. Or just add to this one about politics in sports that already is in there.

Someone already started a new thread in this forum about possibly new names, which was fine. But then someone decided to toss in their two cents with comments about why it should be change, and that already has happened in this thread. That's gets us into social justice, the definition of racism, etc.. And that discussion doesn't belong in here.

Regardless this topic in due time will end up with a thread cause of this pressure.

We gotcha, so only names and why we the names and not because of why, we have to change the name. So I guess what I need to say is, we all know outside forces as causing the name change, so let's only discuss possible names and why we like or dislike them, so no going into how come?

I stand by the Cleveland Tribe. "Tribe" is, by definition, not associated with a particular group of people. The team already uses Tribe for a secondary name and in a lot of marketing. Only minor uniform tweaks would be needed and the logo is fine.

That would be totally fine...except people have already shown they will not limit it just to that. Some folks just can't resist slipping in their views on those other issues, and that stuff will always escalate quickly because people do not agree on those issues. I'll give it another shot, but the next time it happens, it'll be locked and formal warnings.

People should know(including myself who was guilt of it in a post) if they violate the rule or not debating the “whether or not/politics” of the existing name that they could be subject to a mod deleted post, mod edited post, warning, or temp ban and not complain if it happens to them.

I just don’t know how we don’t have discussion on potential new names when the team has acknowledged in an official tweet that It’s under consideration.

As a fellow guilty person, the statement and possible new names is a worthwhile discussion. We just gotta clean it up just discuss the idea of new names. ie not a fan of tribe, but leave it at that.

Hope we get to see the names that made the final grouping but werent chosen so we can banter about which one not chosen was better when we don't like the one they go with.

This will only make the ESPN special 'The Decision 2021' all the more awkward.

Forest City Baseball Club is an early frontrunner for me. Would be hella unique; although seeing as the surrounding forest got cut down eons ago, may be a little wierd. But definitely unique.

I hope people realize that naming them the Cleveland Buckeyes will just invite a good, historical analysis of how exactly the city treated the Negro League team and something tells me, and it's just a hunch, that we may not want to revisit that. Or maybe we do, but this isn't the thread for that. So cool name and jerseys aside, might not be a wise option.

I used to defend the Indians name, but at this point I think it is best to change it.

The Spiders isn't that bad to be honest, but I think Commodores or Guardians are the better option. Part of me hopes they go with a full-on rebrand and change the colors up too.
