Thoughts on trading Jose Ramirez

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am hesitant to wade into this thread as I think a Ramirez trade this off-season is extremely unlikely. That said, this Brewers blog speculation on the potential acquisition costs is interesting. Obviously far superior to the Lindor-Cookie return.

That shit is comical! Clearly that author isn't paying attention to Cleveland's current situation. I won't go as far to say that Ramirez is untouchable, but I feel safe saying that the return will have to be incredible. If the Brewers want Ramirez then the talks cannot begin without Huira being the 1st piece. I don't think they have what it takes to get a deal done TBH.

Interesting, Pluto had a quote along those exact lines from Tito today:

We were kind of in the mode where there wasn’t a chance to see him (Jesus Aguilar) play. We weren’t sure if he could play or not...now, there are a few guys, we want to see if they can do it.

The Indians obviously have not forgotten that Aguilar made the All-Star team after they let him walk. Now he says "there are a few guys" in the same situation and the Indians are thinking we don't want to make that mistake again. Off the top of my head my guess is that group consists of Bradley, Chang, Luplow, Mercado, Zimmer, Amed Rosario, and Daniel Johnson. Also Quantrill as a starter. Obviously they aren't going to be giving all of them everyday starting jobs, but they will all be playing everyday IMO, either in Cleveland or Columbus.

Another Francona quote:

We like Yu Chang, we really do...We’d like to give him some everyday at-bats and see where it takes him. There’s a lot of talent in there.

So I'm thinking they're done dealing and will roll with what they have with the exception of needing a lefty in the pen. I'm all in on Gimenez, at least for one year, so Rosario for a LOOGY would suit me just fine.

As for the rest of them, I don't think Bradley, Chang or Zimmer can hit big league pitching but I would like to see Mercado, Luplow, and Johnson get at least 300 at-bats with the big club this year even if it costs us some wins. It would yield valuable information to make decisions going forward as we hopefully get in position to gradually increase the payroll over the next few years.
I would remove Mercado, Zimmer, Luplow and Bauers from the Aguilar comp. They’ve all had full season opportunities to be every day players, or in Luplow’s case, multiple years as a platoon guy. I think Bradley, Chang and Johnson fit that comp much better.

Well, the author was prompted by a tweet on Saturday (@ 4 pm if I found the right one)...

MLB Marathon

#Indians are listening to offers for 3B Jose Ramirez. #MLB

Unfortunately, the article author (& many others) did not read the 2nd & 3rd follow up tweets from the same person (copied here)

MLB Marathon

By the off chance the #Indians go from listening, to actually shopping Ramirez, the return will be much more than what the #Rockies are reportedly getting from the #STLCards. #Dodgers, #Braves, #Brewers would be the most logical destinations. #MLB
&
MLB Marathon

And no, it would not make any sense whatsoever for the #Indians to deal JRam unless they receive a kings ransom. They are listening yes, but not inclined as of yet. #MLB

I feel people would have remained more grounded if the 1st & 3rd tweets had gone out as 1 single item.

They should be listening. But need to be made an offer they can’t refuse.

“Thank you for your time, talk to us in a year or 2”. There is the extent of their listening. Some of these convos they aren’t even letting teams layout the parameter of a potential trade.

These other teams can fantasize all they want about the Indians “shopping” Jose (they aren’t), but no one is going to give anything close to what they’d want for him with Covid still such a major issue for most of the league.

I don't even think that's enough Gson. At this point I think the Indians are very close to being a contender, and they may already be if a couple of the youngsters come through. I'd like to see one more big RH bat to either back up whichever LHH wins 1B duties, or take over the job himself. I've mentioned that if CJ Cron can be had cheaply then he would be worth a gamble.

If they are "listening" to offers for Ramirez then there is probably on a couple of teams capable of offering enough to make it happen. Believe it or not, I think the Nationals would have the best shot if they chose to do so. I'm not advocating for or expecting it at this time.

No thanks but I did enter a deal into the Baseball Trade Values simulator & it was "accepted". Looking at the values of the packages I was expecting a rejection. My guess is MKE would still reject it.

CLE receives Huira, Devin Williams & G Mitchell (84.4 value)
MKE receives JRam & Sam Hentges (76.3 value)

Since I exchanged tweets with Chang this offseason, telling him this was his first real shot at a full time job and to be ready, the Tribe gets Gimenez and resigns Hernandez. Shot gone. UNLESS, the Tribe deals Rosario (not cheaply, but for something worthwhile) and also decides to play the service game with Gimenez (something they should definitely do), then Chang would have a shot at regular time at short. He was in superb physical and mental shape to attack this season, so the acquisitions had to be a blow, but Francona's comments have to buoy him to some degree, especially since Terry' hasn't often shown much faith in Chang previously.

I share the skepticism of others for Bobby Bradley's ability to make contact, but I reject the notion that Naylor's sugar is all singles...that kid has real raw power...tapping into consistently at the major league level takes some time. And he doesn't have the contact issues Bradley or Zimmer suffer from (sadly, another guy whose contact problems undermine his awesome power potential to all fields).

Luplow had a fine 2019 and I think that's more indicative of his ability than the fluky 2020, where he had so much trouble getting going. That can easily happen to guys on the right hand side of a platoon. Think how up and down Ryan Raburn was over his career.

I'm very intrigued by Daniel Johnson. He has insane tools (an 80 arm?!?) including speed, power, and defense. It would be shame not to stick him in RF, if only to platoon with Luplow. I think they would kill it as a tandem when all is said and done.

It's centerfield where the worry is. But it's not like Mercado and Zimmer haven't shown SOMETHING at the major league level. But you gotta show some consistency. Still, when Zimmer was sent down this past summer, he had a better OBP than Lindor when we were struggling terribly. I still don't know why we didn't use 2020 as a laboratory for some of these guys. I mean, here we had expanded rosters and a mickey mouse season, and we ran DeShields, Domingo Santana, and Mike freakin' Freeman out to get OF at-bats when they could have gone to DJ, Zimmer, and even Ka'ai Tom, for crying out loud.

Like many teams.. they have guys that are only involved in a deal if the return is so overwhelming, they'd be held in negligect by their fans.. Devin Williams is just such an untouchable for the Brewers..

I'd love the deal.. the Brewers would not entertain it.. imo.
