Why would there be any issue with saying you want to be like Thome? Shouldn't you aim to be a Hall of Fame player?
Because he isn't that talented? Because he isn't even close to being a Thome Jr at this point? Because maybe its another way to politely say he thinks he's better than he really is? Self awareness is important for all adults, even professional athletes. He wouldn't be the first Tribe prospect lately to think like this; just got done with another 1b who had power that never materialized who thought he was the next Joey Votto, even as he struggled to hit his weight. Our current corner OFer/4th OFer was too cool for winter school not too long ago; now here he is, hanging onto his bigleague career by a thread. This isn't the first time we have heard a scout doubt Jones, so maybe there is something here besides someone holding a grudge over a comment made 6-7 years ago or whenever Jones was a teenager. How dare he say he has aspirations to be like the guy in the HOF that also has a statue in Progressive Field
It likely wouldn’t make enough of a dent in Laureano’s value (change the package appreciably). As opposed to taking on a Mulholland with Marte. Now that’s a contract that’s disturbingly underwaterA question...
If Laureano was a free agent, how much would you be willing to pay him for a one year deal? Two years? Three years?
Would you be willing to pay him $10 mil for one year?
$15 mil for two?
$22-24 mil for three?
Just spit balling here...
Laureano will get just under $3 mil this year. He is under control for three years. A normal progression in arby would be 3-5-7, a little more if he continued as a 4 WAR player.
Elvis Andrus will get $14.25 mil next year, but $7.25 of that will be paid by the Rangers. He also has a vesting option that kicks in at 550 PAs next year, which he won't get.
His total cost is $7 mil. It's also possible that he could be flipped, if we paid most of it...say $5 mil.
Anyway, Oakland would love to get out from under his contract. They would at least listen to an offer for Laureano that included taking Andrus salary off their hands.
Laureano and Andrus would cost us just under $10 mil next year, maybe a little less. Thats more bang for the buck than any FA OF we could sign....and we'd still have Laureano for two more years at well below market value.
A few things on Jones:
1. This Thome thing is coming from, as far as I can tell, a random guy on Twitter. Not Mandy Bell, not Jeff Passan, not anyone proven to be credible - just some guy.
2. By almost every account I've heard/read from actual reliable sources, Jones is a hard-worker, modest, and well-liked by teammates.
3. Even if it is true, are we really questioning him for setting his sights on greatness? Hell, I hope every single prospect wants to be great. That's the mentality most successful athletes have. If a player is aiming to be the next Mike Rouse that's a bigger problem IMO.
4. Again, we reallllllly need some news.
Think this went over your head worse than a fly ball hit at Daniel JohnsonBecause he isn't that talented? Because he isn't even close to being a Thome Jr at this point? Man! I would hate to see OGon walk after posting numbers like that.Decision time approaching for Cleveland Guardians after a season of player evaluation
The Guardians handed out a lot of playing time in 2021 in an effort to see who could help them in the future. Here's a look at some of the players who took advantage of that and and some who didn't.www.cleveland.com
I’m with you. I think all the guys you listed (before Gimenez/Rosario, obviously) are DFA candidatesMan! I would hate to see OGon walk after posting numbers like that.
HRam, Zimmer, and Mercado can all go down the road.
Perez's option is far too expensive for a poor hitting C that can't stay healthy.
I love Clement, but how important is he to the success of the 22 Guardians?
Chang performed well down the stretch. I guess if they wanted to trade Gimenez or Rosario he could be kept around until one of the up and comers take it.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens.
When I look at the current 40 man roster, I count 15 that could be sent packing with little to no regret. How many spaces do we need?I’m with you. I think all the guys you listed (before Gimenez/Rosario, obviously) are DFA candidates
as few as 8... as many as 11When I look at the current 40 man roster, I count 15 that could be sent packing with little to no regret. How many spaces do we need?
Not to mention Johnson and Chang. If we hang on to Zimmer, Mercado and Harold types and lose O. Gonzales because of one of them the front office is a joke. None of these guys are difference makers and you can sign a few every off season. We have a bunch of young guys knocking on the door in the next 2 years that we don't want to lose before giving them a chance.
Then I don't see the problem.as few as 8... as many as 11
